News from the Career and Pathways HUB
August 2023
It has been a very busy start to the term in the Careers and Pathways office. We kicked off with the Careers and Pathways Expo in week 1, with a wide range of tertiary institutions and gap year options for students and families to learn about. Presentations by Defence Careers, Camp America and Bond University were very well received, and expo stands run by Monash, Melbourne and Deakin Universities and Crimson Education were very busy throughout the night. Thank you to everyone who came along on the night and helped to make the event such a great success.
Last week our Year 10 students embarked on work experience across a wide range of industries. It was an absolute joy to go out and visit some of the students and see them immersed in the workforce, and the incredibly positive feedback I received from employers made me proud to be a representative of the school. While not all students were working in industries they have an interest in pursuing, all developed many transferrable skills including communication, cooperation, independence, problem solving and adaptability that will assist them throughout the years to come. I would like to thank all the staff who assisted in getting the students out on work experience and visiting them throughout the week, and also the families who supported the students in finding placements. It is not an easy task, but it is definitely worth the effort.
VTAC
Current Year 12 students are now able to open their VTAC accounts and enter their tertiary preferences and apply for SEAS and scholarships. I am meeting with year 12 students to discuss their preferences at the moment, and if anyone would like additional information to assist them, please see the following resources:
Please keep note of the below key dates over the coming months.
Career Bites sessions
Would you like to be part of our Futures program at Huntingtower?
Thank you to the members of the HT community who have responded to my short survey regarding sharing your experiences in your career and related industry with our senior students. Year 11 students have now attended two “Career Bites” sessions during their Futures classes. They have been lucky enough to hear about careers in Medicine, Physiotherapy and Exercise Physiology, Law, Business/Commerce, Human Resources and Design. If you would like to be a part of this exciting program, and help our students make informed choices about their futures, please complete the very short survey here. We have one session remaining for the year in early term 4 and would love to have more members of our community present.
Upcoming events
Universities continue to offer a range of onsite and online activities including campus tours and course information sessions. Please see the details below regarding dates and how to register for these events. Even if you have missed a session of interest, you should still be able to register to receive the recording if the event was held online. As always, I highly recommend students in years 10-12 use these events to assist with their planning and decision making.
