Auslan News

During the first week of August, all students will have the opportunity to meet with deaf author Kerrie Taylor.  Kerrie is a Melbourne local and brings with her a unique range of skills, experience and knowledge to share.  All students at NLPS will participate in a special 1 hour workshop. Kerrie has produced a series of books written in English with Auslan illustrations and will sign these with the students. At the beginning of the year, the school purchased a set of these books and students will use these copies during the workshop sessions.  Students will have the opportunity to ask questions and complete activities to help them understand the importance of bridging the gap between English and Auslan.

Prep News

This week in Prep we have been working hard at practising our Writing goals. On Wednesday, students in Prep MW had some time to work on their individual writing goals by doing some free writing. In this session, students needed to reflect on what they may need to improve on and select a goal from their ‘writing goal checklist’. They were then asked to write a sentence that practises applying this goal.

Some of our goals are:

  • Using the sound wall to help us when we get stuck
  • Being a risk taker and having a go at writing by ourselves
  • Listening to the first sound of the word and writing it down
  • Leaving spaces between each word
  • Rereading what we have written

It was a successful session for all students as everyone was able to see the benefits of working towards a goal in order to bring their writing to the next level.

Here are some great examples of what we achieved this week in Writing:

Year 3 News

Last Thursday the Year 3 students had a fantastic incursion run by Mini Bosses called Crack It! The Game Show. We gathered in Tammi and Olivia’s rooms to compete in teams of 5 or 6 and work through different challenges, scoring points as we went.

Some of the challenges included making words from letters, guessing shapes and even a backwards spelling bee! Try spelling ACTIVITY backwards! Or even CLOTHING! Then try GOLDEN!

The Game Show was quite a challenge as we really had to work hard and co-operate in order to achieve the tasks. It was easy to get overwhelmed and upset sometimes especially when we didn’t win or didn’t get chosen to represent the group. It can also be a challenge to be part of the audience and cheer others on especially when we are not directly involved. However, the best thing was that we were able to collect points all the way through, especially when we showed teamwork, encouragement, and support for others and overcame our challenges.

Overall it was loads of fun!

School Athletics Carnival 2023

On Monday, 17th July, all of the students in Year 3-6 went to the Newport Athletics Track to participate in our annual school athletics carnival.

It was great to see the sun shining brightly throughout the day and to see the students dressed in their house team colours as they participated in eight individual track and field events.

The day is designed to select our school’s athletics team which will participate at the District Athletics Carnival at the same venue on Wednesday, 2nd August. Students and families who have qualified for that exciting event will be notified via Compass at some stage next week.

The day is also a House Team event. The final results from the day were:

  • 1st Place – Green House  - 1,448 points
  • 2nd Place – Red House   - 1,431 points
  • 3rd Place – Yellow House  - 1,232 points
  • 4th Place – Blue House  - 1,209 points

Congratulations to all the students in Green House and to all the students who participated on the day.

We’d also like to thank all of the parents and staff in the Newport Lakes community who generously volunteered to help run an event on the day. Big events like this cannot take place without your help.
