Aboriginal Education

Me and My Mob update

Our year 7 girls have been extremely busy, last term we looked at and mapped where everyone was from and wrote our own Acknowledgements of Country. We also explored online safety and continued with some art that we had started. This term we are planning some fun activities and excursions so keep an eye out for pictures to come. Excitingly, we hope to roll this program out for year 8 students this term, so stay tuned.

NAIDOC Week

During the school holidays our Lyambay Dancers celebrated NAIDOC Week with Oorala, Flourish and Armajun Aboriginal Health Services by performing at the celebration. Stay tuned to see them in action again at our NAIDOC celebration in early Term 4. If you are interested in holding a stall for What can you do for Mob Expo on Tuesday 24th October please email Tash on natasha.griffiths2@det.nsw.edu.au or call 6776 7400.

PCYC Nations of Origin

During the school holidays several of our students attended PCYC’s Nations of Origins, to play in the under 14’s Basketball team, they did a fantastic job where they won over half their games. The teams also got to attend the third State of Origin Match.

Congratulations to Jake, Cyril, Jovan, Madi, Kya and Karla.

Tutoring

With the Community Connector Program run in conjunction with Armajun we have been able to provide tutoring for our Yr 11 & 12 students. There are still places available so if you would like to take part please contact Mrs Louise Drielsma at louise.drielsma@det.nsw.edu.au

ACOS

We would like to congratulate and recognise the success of our Lyambay Dance who were joined by Aboriginal dance from the primary schools in their performance at ACOS on Thursday (10/08) evening.

All students had a great time and put on a fabulous performance. Thank you to all who participated and came along to support our students.

Sophia-Rose Markham

This year I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside ABCN through their Accelerate Scholarship,  which provides mentoring over the HSC years and first year of University. As part of this, I attended the Leadership Summit in May, learning valuable transferable skills and having the opportunity to MC at the corporate dinner. One of the biggest takeaways from the summit was the importance of community involvement. Following this I was motivated to be a part of initiatives such as the Armidale Show Young Woman comp, Black Mountain Dance workshops, and assisting Aunty Tash and the team with the Year 7 My Mob and Me program. I was lucky enough to be nominated and named part of the Top 50 and then Top 10 Year 11/12 Trailblazers, which was an amazing opportunity.

Yarn-Up

We would like to invite all Aboriginal parent and caregivers to our Yarn-Up for term 3. Please come along and have a yarn with our Aboriginal Education Team and Head Teachers. The Yarn-up is happening on Tuesday 22nd August from 12pm to 1:30pm at Kent House. Lunch will be provided, please RSVP by the 18th of August by contacting our team on 6776 7400. We hope to see you there.
