Lowers Years ~

Lowers Years Camp at Alexandra Adventure Resort ~ what an amazing experience for our children. This outdoor camp set in the picturesque high country gave us the opportunity to build resilience, teamwork, challenge us to get out of our comfort zone, and have lots of fun. We are so proud of our 3/4 Students who displayed our school-wide expectations on camp ~ they did their best, they helped others succeed & respected themselves, others and the environment.

Published Books in our home languages ~

During the first Semester I was involved in a research project with Monash University in Melbourne focused on bringing home languages into the classroom and exploring the process of creating bilingual books with students.

Throughout this process, I was thrilled to work with 13 eager 5/6 students to create 8 different books about a variety of cultural celebrations and traditions. These students planned and researched, wrote in English and their home language (with some help of Google Translate), created illustrations, edited and recorded themselves reading their home language.

After all their hard work and dedication, I was thrilled to present them with a final published copy of their books at a special assembly last week. Well done to Ridhaan, Aarush, Samah, Hadeel, Lance, KM, Khaniskaa, Dakora, Armaandeep, Karmjot, Michael K, Jami and Kai on your first published books!

Staff Visit to the Langauge Learning Centre

St Mel’s staff recently visited the Shepparton English Language Centre (SELC) to see their English as an Additional Language (EAL) program.  Given our diversity, proximity, and number of EAL students at St Mel’s, this was a great opportunity to see first-hand their amazing facility and programs they use to support students and families of diverse backgrounds.  Building connections and learning new strategies and skills go a long way to helping staff become more proficient and confident educators.  Supporting students and families of different backgrounds is something we pride ourselves on at St Mel’s.
