Individual Research Assignment on Ancient Egypt

I enjoyed doing the Ancient Egyptian project. I learnt about the pharaoh, Tutankhamun who was discovered by Howard Carter 101 years ago. I also learnt about the Ancient Egyptian Gods, Osiris, Isis and Horus who were the most important gods.

I loved doing the Ancient Egypt project and also enjoyed how we had a display in the classroom, and we were able to see each other's projects. Something I learnt while researching information about Ancient Egypt is that everyone in Ancient Egypt drank beer and only the rich people drank milk.

EARTH AT ACADEMY

Frock Fest in term 3

We’ve been really busy at Earth at Academy this year. Having wrestled a $2000 sustainability grant from the Yarra Council, we would like to introduce to you …Frock Fest … a fashion show with a twist (and a leg-o-mutton sleeve). We will be bringing out the classics in the Hall at lunchtime on the 16th of August! Our theme … 1980s glamor fashion.

The aim of the parade is to showcase what’s out there in the op shops, the vintage shops, the back of your mother’s wardrobe and at your local dress up shop. You don’t have to buy new to be FABULOUS!

We have the effervescent and fashion forward Ms Hamilton to compare the event and have dredged up some iconic tunes from the 80s. Harriet and Hannah have been on a very important reconnaissance mission to Rose Chong Costumiers to secure some of the most fabulous ball gowns and party frocks still in circulation: show stopping pieces our students will be modelling. Students interested in finding fun ways to subvert fast fashion or fashionistas who love a parade please join us on 16 August at lunchtime!

LANGUAGES

Yr 9 Languages Day

On Monday, the year 9 students were able to experience the privilege of a day filled with different food coming from different cultures and countries and activities based on the language we were learning. As the day started, our cohort was met with a session in the lecture hall that included information about the influence learning a language has on our upcoming futures and the benefit it has to our ATAR. Later on, we were able to listen to three guest speakers who described their experiences learning languages and how they used them in their daily lives after high school.

Later in the day, our teachers set up a morning tea that consisted of sushi, croissants and cannoli to represent the languages taught at the Academy (Japanese, French and Italian).

This day was different for all students because it was dependent on the language you were learning. Those who learnt Italian visited the NGV to view Italian art pieces and walked to Tiamo, an Italian restaurant located on Lygon Street to eat a variety of pizzas. Similarly, those who learnt French also attended a guided tour at the NGV to view art pieces but these were French rather than Italian. After, we were able to enjoy baked goods at Laurent on Little Collins St to experience the food generally found when visiting France. Lastly, the students who learnt Japanese were able to stay at the Academy to experience an incursion showcasing Traditional Japanese Drumming (たいこ). We were able to watch the professionals perform multiple sets and were also able to try drumming for ourselves. It was extremely fun but required much synchronisation that we learnt quickly was hard to achieve.

Overall, Languages Day was an experience that opened eyes to the importance of learning languages and the benefits that come with it. With language learning, we are able to make new friends and travel different places with a better understanding of the countries and cultures we will visit in the future.

Languages Day was a fun and interesting experience that gave me an insight into how important languages are. We started the day with some guest speakers and a presentation on the benefit of learning a language. The guest speakers talked about how their knowledge of languages assisted and possibly impacted their lives in school and beyond. After, we had a morning tea that consisted of sushi, cannoli and croissants we all split off into our languages groups and headed to our first stop. The Italian group got to go to the NGV and learn about Italian art and culture. After that, we went to Lygon Street to eat at Tiamo. This was my favourite part as we were able to spend time with our friends and immerse ourselves in the culture. I am thinking of continuing languages next year because they offer many great opportunities and are fun to learn.

Zara Fox 9 Barak (Italian)

On Monday our French class immersed in the French culture of Melbourne. We began the day at school where we listened to guest speakers explain the importance and benefits of continuing a language all the way to VCE. We then enjoyed morning tea from three different languages. We had cannoli from Italy, a croissant from France and sushi from Japan. The groups then went their separate ways, with the French group heading to Laurent on Little Collin Street for some early lunch. There was lots to choose from, however, I chose a cheese and tomato toastie with salad and a macaron. It was delicious! We then headed over to the NGV, where a tour guide took us around to explore French art from the Middle ages and more recently. All together it was a fun day. I think I will continue French.

As part of “Refugee Week” the MRC hosted a short documentary film at lunchtime organized by the Justice Group. It explored 5 inspiring stories of real Australian Refugees. The students who attended gained knowledge and understanding about refugees and celebrated the positive contributions made by refugees to Australian society.

Two week ago we launched the “Year 7 Readers’ Cup” to enthuse the students to get excited about reading. Each week the Year 7s record how many pages they have read and write reviews via our Library Home page. We will be recording our reading until November. Who will be the winning class?
