Feast of the Most Sacred Heart

On Friday 16th June, we will celebrate the Feast of the Most Sacred Heart with Mass at 9:15am (all welcome). This is a special day where we learn about and celebrate our school and its founders. This not only is a church feast day, it is also our school feast day. Sacred Heart Church and parish has a long history in Tatura and has seen many changes over the years. Do you know the history of our parish, school and convent?

In 1900, the Sisters of Mercy began teaching at St. Mary’s School across the road from where we now learn. They came to Tatura in 1897, to help fill the need for Catholic Education in the area and began work straight away. Once St. Mary’s was built and teaching had begun, they also started taking on boarders, which continued until the 1950s. Interestingly, there were a number of students who were in fact not Catholic but other religions - ecumenism at its grass roots.  Our current church was rebuilt in 1912 and still stands today and our school was rebuilt in 1966, also to where it stands today.

The Sports Houses are named after prominent Sisters of Mercy, as a sign of respect for all that they did in their time as Mercy Sisters. Ask your children who Catherine McAuley or Ursula Frayne or Alphonsus Geary are and what they each did for their communities. We also celebrate our modern day Sisters of Mercy including visits from Sr. Pam.

There is so much more to our school and parish history. Why don’t you come in sometime and read the booklet about the history or come along on Friday to Mass and chat with students afterwards to see what they know about Sacred Heart.

First Reconciliation

In term 3, parents and the school will be running the ‘Steps in Faith’ First Reconciliation program. Any parents who have children in grade 3 and up, who have not received their First Reconciliation, and they would like them to - are invited to register their child ASAP by sending the form below back to Emily via email or dropping it into the office (if you haven’t already done so). A Parent Formation Evening will be held on Tuesday 11th July at 6pm, to give more information about the program and provide formation to support you and your child. This evening is just for parents and we do ask that you all attend.
