Grade 1 Fortnightly Snapshot - Week 6/7
March 4 2021
It is hard to believe we are now half way through Term 1! Students are now familiar with classroom routines and expectations and are enjoying all areas of the Grade 1 curriculum. It is great to see students expanding their friendship circles both in the classroom and in the playground.

This Snapshot will give you an outline of what your child will have learnt in the subject areas in the last week and will learn in the week ahead. We also aim to provide you with any videos or explanations you may need to practise certain skills such as the 'codes'.
Reading
Students are enjoying the decodable books they are taking home to read with you each night as well as their picture books that you are reading to them. It is an expectation that students read their decodable books each night with you and record the title in their planners.
Last week in reading students enjoyed setting up their own Reader's Notebook. They had fun personalising their front cover and sharing their interests as a reader.

In week 6 students have worked on increasing their reading stamina and how to present a short book talk.
Next week students will learn to make predictions about a book. When students actively predict while reading, they stay connected to the text and can reflect upon, refine, and revise their predictions.
Writing
This week and next week in writing students are identifying and creating the different sentence types - question, statement, command and exclamation. They are also matching the correct punctuation to the sentence. All the classes have enjoyed listening to the book 'I Want My Hat Back', to give examples of statements and questions.

Word Work
Students are continuing to revise the codes they learnt in Prep as well as adding new codes to their classroom working pack each week. Below is a PDF of the first 40 codes if you would like to continue revising these at homes. If you click on the code they will play the sounds each one makes.
Next week students will also be revising Rule 6: 'Y replaces i at the end of an English word'. Handwriting and letter formation is also a focus during these boot camp sessions. This year at BPS we are trialing print instead of Victorian Modern Cursive.
Below you will find the handwriting script and the codes for your own use at home.
Last week students completed a summative assessment on data. This entailed students asking a question of interest about the class, collecting data, representing the data in a graph and interpreting the graph.

This week students have learnt about mass. They have used hefting to compare how heavy or light something is compared to a book. Students then progressed to using balance scales to compare the weight of items in the classroom as well as comparing the mass of objects using uniform informal units.

Next week students will be learning about place value.
This week we continued to explore our unit of inquiry Who We Are with the central idea Choices affect our health.
Students started the week by setting a health goal. We are encouraging them to think about and choose goals they can achieve such as, 'My goal is to ride my bike twice a week to school to improve my physical health'.
They are also learning about the different relationships they have in their lives and how they started.
Wellbeing
This week in well-being students have explored how their strengths can help others and how this can help build a friendship.

Next week students will explore why we need friends and how to start and keep a friendship.
