Learning in the Library

With a new year comes new opportunities to welcome students to the EDSC Library. Over the past few weeks, we’ve had a variety of classes visit the Library, from Year 7s with their first-time orientation, to Year 12s discovering high-level academic research skills. Many of these Library sessions have been a great refresher for students on using our wonderful Library website, on finding books on the shelves, and downloading eBooks/audiobooks for reading at home (remember to login using Compass details).

A particularly popular feature of our website has been the Reading Lists, curated by Library staff to help students browse popular topics to find new books to read. Students have also been excited to find fun and educational movies and TV shows available at home through ClickView (you’ll need to login to ClickView with your EduPass details).

During these Library lessons, Library staff have also offered book talks – recommending books for a variety of interests and reading levels. These books have covered a broad range of our genres, from Fantasy to True Stories to Graphic Novels, as well as showcasing some of our great Non-Fiction books. By sharing our personal opinions about books, and opening up discussion of books with the class, we hope to create a reading culture where every student is excited to find a book they can enjoy!

Library Extra-Curricular Programs

The Literature Club is now meeting in the Library every Friday at lunchtime (restrictions permitting). This club is for students who love movies, TV, and books. They enjoy discussing their favourite literature with a group of like-minded people, sharing recommendations, and playing games related to words, literature, and pop culture. The club loves to welcome new members and is very open and friendly. We look forward to growing this club further in 2021.

The Library is also still taking applications for our Library Monitor program, where students can help make the Library a fun and great place to be! Library Monitors help with the front desk, with book recommendations and reviews, library displays, and general shelving and tidying. There will be an end of year celebration to say thank you for their great work. All year levels are encouraged to apply. Fill out the form on the Library website (or collect a copy from the Library) and bring it into the Library by Friday 26 February.

Library Lovers’ Day

This month is Library Lovers’ Month, and Sunday, February 14 was Library Lovers’ Day (the same as Valentine’s Day!) We have created a display in the library to celebrate this special time. Come and have a look - students can borrow books from the display or browse the ‘Romance’ and ‘Relationships’ shelves of the library for a romantic escape!

The Library of course has many other genres of books that you can browse on our website and borrow too.
