Year 1/2–Celebrating Learning

1/2 - Mainstream

Students have been super excited to be back at school learning with their peers! They have been very busy learning about the writing process in our writers' workshops. We have also explored the fabulous world of Reading, number sense and place value.

Students have been investigating  the key understandings of our integrated unit,

‘My Community’.

An inquiry into:

  • The ways groups of people develop a sense of inclusion, belonging and connection.
  • Looking at the school and exploring significant changes that have occurred over time.
  • How communities lived and played in the past.

1S - Steiner

Class One students have been learning and revising the consonants through the story of ‘The Kings Quest’. This story was about a king who was kind and brave and quick of thinking. This king went on a journey to fix a magical fountain that lived in his kingdom's garden.

In this Main Lesson students worked with a letter a day over a three day rhythm. They drew a picture that incorporated and represented the letter. They investigated the sounds that these letters made and wrote sentences with words that started with these sounds. Class one students also played around with writing their own alliterative sentences with matching illustrations.

Class Two students continue to develop their understanding of place value. The numbers are still seen and read for their real value and the children explore and discover a variety of strategies to solve problems. Number stories and rich images from the story material provide engagement with problems and magical mysteries to solve!

In our Celtic Tales Main Lesson, students continue to bring a creative response to the learning experience through the writing and illustrating of their own books: they continue to build a bank of sight words, continue to master a variety of simple phonic patterns through word families, and between the combination of these twin processes students begin to develop word attack skills.
