Kirrip-Nganjin Day

"Today we did something that will last years....We created a place of happiness".  Kingston and Manarra

As part of our Harmony Week and National Day against violence and bullying all students did workshops with Megan and Emma to create our own Buddy Benches - or our Kirrip-Nganjin Chairs. We all painted special brightly coloured seats,  placed near the iuk and close to the prep area.  These chairs are a place where children who are lonely or sad can sit, in doing so alerting teachers and other pupils that there might be a problem.

On Monday children were taught in the school how special the seat is, and to look out for any student who is on it.  Junior classes participated in sessions exploring how we can play well on Wurrundjerri land.  Senior classes took part in memory walks and looked at leadership in our yard.

It is hoped that children will approach the seat, and invite whoever is on it to play with them, or simply check if they are okay. The seat can be a key beginning to promoting friendship and kindness in youngsters and help build a sense of community.  A seat like this in schools has been shown to help reduce bullying behaviour, because of the inclusive and caring values the seat requires the children to be aware of.

A special certificate was given to Dasha and Selby for having the idea of our school having Buddy Chairs!

Ngoongodgin to everyone for their support of this project.
