ROWING REPORT

Rowers had a very successful weekend at the State Championships Regatta on Lake Nagambie. The senior rowers made the 5-hour trip to compete on Saturday, with conditions making it a fantastic day for racing. Highlights from the day include a silver medal in the Division 3 coxed quad skull, congratulations Lucy Roberts, Jordy Brown, Marni Covill, Poppy Austin and cox Bella Edgar. The determined senior boys competed in their last regatta together as a crew. Coming third in their heat, the boys and Millie looked to be a good chance in the final. Their performance placed them in fourth, just missing out on a podium finish.

On Sunday, we welcomed the junior crews to the Nagambie lake. Early in the morning, Hettie Byrne and Sylvia Page rowed their double in a tough 2-kilometre race followed by Sam Crawford and Milo Cooper, competing in their very last race together in a double. our junior girls followed and earnt a podium finish with a bronze medal in their Under 15s final, congratulations Miranda Page, Emma Donovan, Molly Mecham, Arabella Dunstan and cox Minnie Walker.

A special mention goes to India Ross for her amazing effort in the 7 km race. Olivia Handbury also competing in a single and had some exhausting 2km races in the heat, leaving her passed out for a few seconds after her last race. To finish the day, Bella Edgar’s crew (Lucy Roberts, Jordy Brown, Marni Covill, Poppy Austin) also received a silver medal in their A grade final with the encouragement of rowers running alongside.

Thank you to coaches, Dr Hirst, Mrs Archer and rowing staff for your contribution this season and congratulations goes to all rowers for their tremendous efforts as most have finished their racing. I would also like to thank Sam and Milo for their commitment to the sport over their 6 years of rowing.

Now, the senior girls continue their training for the next 2 weeks in their last chance to show what they are made of at the Head of School Girls regatta.

Netball

It was another very successful day for netball on Saturday to follow up the promising start College had in Round 1, with three out of the four netball teams coming away with a win in their various age groups. To continue a great start to their season, Alexa Balog’s Under 13 Magpies came out on top limiting their opposition to no goals with a 25 to 0 win. Better players for the Magpies were Sophie Spence, dominating in goals, and Isabella Malseed, who was a strong midcourt force.

In the Under 15 and 18 competition, College Vixens, led by Sophie Cunningham, had an extraordinary win of 56 to 1 against Monivae. Zoe Balog, Elsie Adams and Alexa Balog were standouts on the day and helped lead their team to victory. The College Diamonds, coached by Millie Dopheide, won 40 to 12 with Emma Vallance, Neve McClure and Rosie Dopheide working seamlessly together in goals. College Swifts, led by Amy Innes, had a close game but just fell short with Sarah Richardson a strong influence on court, and fill-in Tessa Ingham playing a vital role in the team.

Just a reminder to all the girls to come to netball training on Wednesday lunchtimes, and please return your consent forms (who owes is in the message on Teams) as soon as possible to Mrs Ogle if you still have not done so. VNA MUST be paid this week (the app is easier to use). There are no games on the long weekend.

Please print the draw (attached) – which is for the remainder of the season. Please note that there are a couple of weeks where our teams play two games on the same day.

Racquet Sports

ICCES Table Tennis and Badminton saw several keen athletes rising early on Tuesday morning and heading down to Melbourne for the day. Teams battled their way through singles and doubles in the table tennis tournament with the senior boys, junior boys and junior girls placing fourth and fifth in their respective age groups. The badminton was a competition you could not take your eyes off with every point determining the play out of the matches. Senior boys, Charlie Keiller, Charley Falla-Jones, and Harry Mould slid their way into third place with a win just one point over the opposition! Talk about playing it close boys!!! There was excellent sportsmanship showed throughout the whole day, in addition to many new friendships being formed. The senior girl’s badminton also played very well, learning lots and having fun. Natalie Ung being most improved female.

Well done to everyone who played and represented the College throughout the day. The good sportsmanship and enjoyment displayed by each student was very rewarding to see..

Cricket

This weekend sees the beginning of the finals series for one of our U14 sides and our U16 side. Both teams have entered the business end of the season in fine form and will be looking to do themselves and the College CC proud.

Sadly, College Gold did not make the finals in the U14s. Pleasingly, they finished the season with victories in their last two games. Thank you to Leigh Alexander for his guidance in building the U14s into a competitive side. With so many U12s in both sides, the next few years are looking bright.

Last week also saw the completion of the U12 cricket season. It was pleasing to see the development across all three sides. Although development is at the heart of what we try to achieve, the main aim of the junior program is to see the junior having fun and smiling. I feel that we certainly achieved that on a regular basis.

I would like to thank the coaches - Bobby Mann, Dave Hintum, Angus Brown, Lachy Watt, Leigh Alexander,  John Austin and Heath Schmidt for their time and efforts this season. Without you, it would not be possible to run a junior section. Also to Lachy Patterson and the CCC committee for their time and being on the end of my countless phone calls.

On behalf of the four coaches, I would like to thank the U12 parents for their transportation to and from games, the watermelon, icy poles and the support you have all offered, week in, week out. We could not run the program without you.

The draws have been made for the Semi-finals this coming week for the two Junior grades, U/16 and U/14. U/16: College v St Andrew’s @ College Turf Monday 8 March & Tuesday 9 March, 2021 at 4.30pm U/14:  Grampians v College Blue @ Dunkeld Turf at 8.45 am Saturday 6 March & Sunday 7 March
