House Athletics

Last Friday saw the Junior School House Athletics at Myrniong.  Unfortunately, COVID-19 restrictions prevented us from hosting parents on the day.  A huge thank you to Mrs. Patterson, Mrs. Povey, the Junior School staff and Senior Campus/Boarding staff - Mr. Leigh Alexander, Ms. Kate Couchman, Mrs. Emily Hausler, Mrs. Abbie Cameron plus our Year 10 helpers who contributed to a smooth and successful day.

The 2021 House Athletics trophy was won by Laidlaw House, with Berry House a close second.

Age Champions for 2021 were;

  • 9 Years - Poppy Shepherd and Jack Novikov
  • 10 Years - Yolanda O’Sullivan and Charlie Hindhaugh
  • 11 Years - Millie Mould and Harry McDonald
  • 12/13 Years - Marianna Novikov and Tom Templeton

Next Thursday, 11 March is the HDSA Athletics at Pedrina Park.  Relaxed restrictions mean we look forward to our parents attending this event.

Young House Service

The first House Service for 2021 will be the Young House on Thursday, 18 March at 10.00am. This Service will be held at the Simons Auditorium at the Senior Campus and all Young House parents are invited to attend. This will be a great opportunity for our Prep to Year Six students to work in a cross-grade capacity. Remember, all students attending must be in blazers and tie.

Learning How to Learn in Year Six

Our two Year Six classes have been focusing on a ‘Learning How to Learn’ unit in Inquiry. The students have investigated the workings of the human brain and have been looking at the different ways in which we learn and process information.  They have also explored the 24 character strengths.  The students were tasked with selecting four strengths that identify them as a Year Six group, and ones they see as pivotal to a successful 2021. After much debate and robust discussion, they selected TEAMWORK, CURIOSITY, LOVE of LEARNING and HOPE.

Learning Progress Meetings

From Friday 5 March, bookings for Learning Progress Meetings can be made with Mrs. Povey.  These three-way meetings are a great opportunity for students, teachers and parents to set goals for the year ahead, as well as discuss student learning progress.  These meetings can take place in person or online via Microsoft Teams.

The meetings will take place in Week 8, on Tuesday 16 March and Wednesday 17 March, from 3.30pm to 5.30pm.  NB: Prep teacher, Mrs. Kelly has a prior engagement on Wednesday 17 March and an alternative afternoon on Wednesday 24 March is available for bookings.

Mr. Nelson will also be available on both afternoons if parents would like to book a time to chat.

2021 House Captains

At this weeks Assembly, our eight House Captains for 2021 were presented with their House Captaincy badges.  They have already commenced their roles, with duties at the House Swimming and House Athletics.  I shared with them seven leadership thoughts from Nick Saban, the renowned Head Coach of the University of Alabama’s football team, the ‘Crimson Tide’.  The House Captains were encouraged to take time to reflect on these thoughts throughout their tenure in 2021.

  1. Be where your feet are.  How do I affect the circumstances right now?
  2. There is no substitute for knowledge.
  3. Leadership is your willingness to help someone else for their benefit.
  4. Don’t ever miss the opportunity to say, “good job”.
  5. Tradition is always under construction.  You never get there.
  6. Leadership is about investing your time and not spending your time.
  7. Sometimes your presence is really important.  Everyone has time to do that.

Congratulations to our 2021 House Captains:

Berry House - Sam O’Sullivan and Tom Templeton

Laidlaw House – Phoebe Alexander and Will Satchell

Learmonth House - Millie Mould and Finley Hiscock

Young House - Marianna Novikov and Finlay Hunt
