Dear Families,

International woman’s day: what a great opportunity to celebrate and recognise all females. I hope we all thanked the females in our lives and we as a society continue to recognise how important they are in every persons life. To our female staff, thank you for being great people, great teachers, great parents and great in all things you do. We appreciate you.

Inspiring: Did anyone see The Project on Sunday night? If not, Google it or go to 10 Play and see Harriet (one of our 2020 School Captains) and Matilda Stepto (and Fiona) talk about their dad Nigel and his battle with cancer. The girls wanted to raise $1000 for cutting and donating their hair to make wigs for cancer patients. On Sunday they had raised $15,000 and today it has sky rocketed to $45,000!!!! What an amazing effort. I’m sure we are all proud of these amazing kids

Project Rockit: What a turn out!!! About 140 parents attended the session run by Dani. An engaging and authentic presenter that provided a great insight into the many and varied platforms kids engage in and on. Thanks to Rick KT for organising this experience for the kids and the families. I sincerely hope that the 140 parents talk to at least 3 other families not there to get the message out!

Thanks to those families who engaged and shared on the night. It takes courage to share in any forum and the issues discussed are real and relevant for us as educators and as parents - we feel the same and have similar worries. It’s important that we continue the conversations as to what we expect, how we behave and what we want our children to grow up and be like - in person and online!!!

Project Rockit Hot Tips: how to help young people experiencing cyber bullying

  • Give realistic and safe advice that you would actually be willing to use yourself.
  • Block the user
  • Report nasty content
  • Take a screen shot for evidence
  • Challenge online hate and discrimination
  • Look for allies (school, families and friends)
  • Work with the school - take the team approach.

The one take away that stood out for me was to “Find your child’s niche!” What is their spark? Our job is to find the spark and fuel it!

Bikes: It’s great to see so many bikes in our racks at school! I’m really proud of how our community has ramped up their bike riding efforts in the past 12 months. Traffic decreases around school, health benefits are obvious and another great time for socialising. However, we have had a number of reports from concerned members of our community about OGPS students and how they are riding their bikes on the roads. While we conduct Bike Ed classes (Year 4) and remind students about how to ride in various places, can we please ask families to keep the conversations going at home about riding safely and being aware. Let’s keep our kids safe.

Geelong School's ANZAC Commemoration Service: This year’s ANZAC Commemoration Service has sadly once again been cancelled due to COVID restrictions. The service was scheduled to be held at the Peace Memorial Foyer at Johnstone Park on Friday 23rd April but will not go ahead this year. Hopefully we will be able to commemorate our 86th year of services in 2022.

Permission forms: the ‘A Team’ in the office are ramping up things with permission forms going out in Sentral. A few clicks and you are done and it stores them on your phone! Please keep your details updated so you don’t miss any and we will continue to try and make various processes easier as we go. Reminder that if an excursion has a payment, then the paper form will come home as a reminder to make the payment too.

Congratulations: 46 years of marriage is not something we hear about everyday. On behalf of the community, can I congratulate Judy and Gary Webb on this achievement and hope they have had a chance to reflect on this achievement and what they have done together! Well done Gary and Judy!

Preps: great to see the Preps at school full time from now on! Parents, please prepare for them to be even more tired and the need to have some down downtime after school. Food helps too!

Hope you all have a great week!
