"How was your Day"

It’s not always easy to get information from your child about how their school day was. A typical after-school conversation might go a little something like this:

“How was your day?”

“Good.”

“What did you do?”

“Nothing.”

Conversations like this can sometimes leave you feeling frustrated as you know that lots happen at school and want to know about what is happening at school during their day.

Here are 10 questions to try out tomorrow and see how your child reacts:

  1. What was the best thing you did today?
  2. What made you smile or laugh today?
  3. What was something different that happened today?
  4. Who did you play with at breaktime? What games did you play at lunchtime?
  5. If you could change one thing that happened today, what would it be?
  6. What are you looking forward to about tomorrow?
  7. What was the last subject you did today, what did you learn?
  8. What’s something your teacher said to you today that made you think?
  9. What part of your day went the slowest? Why?
  10. What was one thing you did today that you would like to do more of?

Some children may need a little space and time to relax after school before they are ready to talk about it. By asking different questions each day you may find out a lot more about your child and how they are doing at school.
