5C - Transferring our school values to Level 5 Camp

By Trish Singh

Level 5 Camp was an incredibly fulfilling experience, we thoroughly enjoyed engaging in new experiences such as the Burke Museum, exploring new foods, the Old Beechworth Goal, investigating Ned Kelly, visiting the Telegram store, hiking and Gold Planning at Woolshed Diggings. Our greatest achievement during camp was creating opportunities to transfer our school values into a new experience.

Respect: We modelled respect to our environment by constantly ensuring that we would clean up after ourselves so that the native flora and fauna remained preserved, as it was prior to us visiting the Old Priory. Another key example was the way we were all complimented for saying ‘may I, please and thank you’ when speaking with each other on camp. This helped us to model how much we care about each other and our environment.

Integrity: We modelled Integrity by being honest in our interactions and actions. For example, if we borrowed something from our peers we ensured that we took responsibility for these items. We were also honest with our tour guides as we shared our ideas and where we were in our learning journey. This provided us with an opportunity to make new learning connections with Ned Kelly and Harry Powers.

Global Empathy: We learnt about multiple rangers and cultures during our visit to Beechworth. We used this opportunity to put ourselves in the shoes of convicts and European settlers, this allowed us to open our minds to differing perspectives and create new opinions about key moments in Australian history. This experience also allowed us to understand how others might have felt during the European settlement and sparked a deep sense of gratitude for us being in Australia currently with equal rights.

Initiative: Camp provided us an opportunity to build life skills such as packing our own bag, keeping our rooms orderly, looking after each other and communicating with others by negotiating what we need. Overall, we are incredibly grateful that we were able to experience our first camp ever!
