Prefects Upstander Event

Last week 15 of our Prefects heard from Jessica Hickman from Bullyology. This event, held at The Hive, was part of their goal to develop an ‘Upstander movement’ at KWS. The event was extremely informative and helped to form their own action plans. The Prefects plan to co-present their ideas and activities with Jessica at our next Wellbeing Day in Term 2, and defined the following on upstanders.

The Upstander possesses the following attributes:

  1. An Upstander chooses to take a positive stance against bullying to help the person being targeted
  2. An Upstander is someone who stands up for someone who is unsure how stand up for themselves
  3. An Upstander is someone who takes action and offers physical and emotional support
  4. An Upstander is courageous and is more concerned for the target rather than consequences

KWS Girls Indigenous Dance

The new Orange Hospital officially opened its doors on March 16, 2011 and staff, volunteers and members of the wider community gathered at the Forest Road site to celebrate its 10th anniversary on Tuesday 16 March.

In acknowledgement of the Hospital's location on Wiradjuri land, the Kinross Wolaroi Senior Girls Indigenous Dance Group was invited to participate in the celebrations.

In what was their first performance as a group in over a year, Mr McLean said, "the girls were amazing and their dance communicated a deep connection with the land, with our ancestors and with our Indigenous traditions. The dance signified the girls becoming women, passing on knowledge and wisdom to the younger generation." The girls were assisted in their dance preparations by Aunty Mary Croaker. Mr McLean extended his sincere thanks to Aunty Mary for giving up her time to come help the girls practice in the lead up.

Our dancers were:

Year 7 - Gemma Blattman, Elise Collison

Year 8 - Kymarni Astill, Chloe Mulcahy

Year 9 -Edie Robinson, Halle Doyle

Year 10 - Charlize Watson

Year 11 - Anna Robinson, Chanel Knight, Nikeata McMaster

Year 12 - Chelsea Edwards

Year 10 History

The Year 10 History Elective students participated in a live discussion via Teams on Wednesday 10th March with Mr Mateusz Świercz as part of their Term 1 study Museology: Learning about the Holocaust through museum spaces.

This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to speak with an expert in the field. He has conducted over 1000 tours of Auschwitz-Birkenau, Schindler’s Factory and many other museums in Krakow, Poland. The students found this inspiring and took his message to them “study History and learn from the past to become better global citizens.”

The students compiled an ‘Aussie Box’ and thank you letters in appreciation for his time, particularly since there is a ten-hour time difference between Orange and Krakow. Some thoughts from our students:

“Thank you Matt for answering my specific question.”

“I found your thoughts on the book The Tattooist of Auschwitz very interesting and clarified some of my questions about the historical accuracy of the book.”

“It was interesting and shocking to learn that there was a swimming pool and an art museum in Auschwitz during the time that it was an active concentration camp.”

Judging from the feedback from Mr Mateusz Świercz (see below) it was a positive experience all round.

"This is all so amazing. I cannot thank you and your students enough. These letters are a joy to read and I am so positively surprised by them. I truly wasn't expecting that but it's been brilliant. I've read them all and still cannot thank all of the students enough for their effort and understanding. Just Wow :)"

Year 7 History

Year 7 History in their exploration of 'What is History' have investigated the historical controversy surrounding the Myth of Atlantis. One of their activities has been to create their own vision of Atlantis. Students could choose any medium to do this. These images are from Ryan Everett’s city, which he created using Minecraft.
