From the Chaplain

Rev. Dr Rosalie Clarke

Greetings to Kinross Wolaroi families

Lent is a time of preparing our hearts for the ultimate good news story – where good overcomes evil in the resurrection of Christ. We hold this in our hearts with hope and faith; and we commit ourselves to work with God for a better world here and now as a result.

Today we think of Jesus calling himself the “Light of the World” who gives us the “light of life”.

Light is an image for so much: wisdom, knowledge and courage. Light is joy and love.

Martin Luther King’s well-known quote speaks volumes, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” In the way that light dispels darkness, so a response of love dissipates hate. So often we do the alternate in this world – confront hate with hate; and darkness with more darkness.

Jesus’s way was to confront hate with love. A victim of oppressive political structures; and a victim of the evil of people who did not wish to take responsibility, who felt threatened by new ways, and who were in it for greed and self-gain – Jesus dies a crucified death. He dies only to overcome this darkness with the light and hope of resurrection on Easter day.

Not to negate sin and suffering, but to name it, endure and challenge it, and to still hold hope for a new time of restoration – this is the Christian message and way of the Cross of Christ.

Love and prayers,

Rev Dr Clarke
