News from the Auslan classroom

From Liam, Auslan specialist

To start this term we have been focusing on some basic skills of fingerspelling, signing numbers, and singing colours. These are skills we have done before but did not have a strong focus on in Term 1. We also have new students to Auslan so it is always good to revisit things.

These skills are also going to be important for later in the term. Year 3, 4, 5, and 6 students are building to what I hope will be a really fun Scavenger Hunt/Escape Room activity that will require a lot of translation skills.

Another thing I wanted to share for the whole NMPS community is a series that is being shown on SBS called “Our Deaf Ways”. It is a great series if you want to learn more about Auslan and the Deaf community in Australia.

I have been accessing the episodes via YouTube but they are also available on SBS On Demand I believe. So far there are two episodes available out of six in total.

Episode 1: Deaf 101

Episode 2: Deaf Stories
