Year 3/4 Term 2 Overview

Year 3/4: Term Two

Welcome back to Term 2!

We hope you found time to relax and recharge with your family and friends, and that your Easter celebrations were extra special.

This week we welcome Jayden Abeysiriwardana back to our school. He will be in Year 3/4C with Marisa and Mrs. Ryan. Jayden was previously at our school in 2020. The term promises to be quite a busy and enriching nine weeks with NAPLAN testing, sport clinics, Jump Rope for Heart and the Premiers Reading Challenge, to name but a few of the activities.

Religious Education

Congratulations to our students who celebrated their First Eucharist last term. It was wonderful to join in such a special day with all of the families together in the church.

Our initial focus this term is on the Resurrection and Jesus' appearances to the disciples. We will be looking at how the interactions with the risen Lord strengthened the disciples and gave them the courage to continue spreading his message of love and forgiveness.

We will also be reflecting on free will and choices in understanding right relationships and the importance of forgiveness and reconciliation, nationally, communally and personally.

Mathematics

In Number and Algebra we will focus on Fractions and Multiplication. For year 3’s this will include modelling and representing halves, thirds, quarters, fifths and eighths. The year 4’s will be recognising common equivalent fractions and making connections between fractions and decimals. We will also be using a variety of efficient mental and written strategies to recall multiplication facts.

In Measurement we will focus on Time, recognising o’clock, half-past, quarter-to, quarter-past and investigating the relationship between units of time. We will also be looking at Geometry specifically focussing on 2D shapes, their properties, lines and angles. All lessons are preceded by fluency practice and supported by the online Mathletics program.

Literacy

In reading we will be focusing on questioning, inferencing and determining the main idea. The initial focus in writing this term is in informing and instructing, where students explain or show facts in biographies, notes, reports or procedures for example. We will also be looking at identifying facts and opinions, understanding bias and prejudice and how authors use these techniques to influence the reader. We will also focus on figurative language and how it is used in persuasive texts.

Social & Emotional Learning

In SEL this term our focus is on positive coping skills: understanding strong emotions, identifying problems and finding resolution strategies. We will also explore what makes a good apology, situations where an apology is appropriate and how it feels when we are offered an apology. Following this we will be focusing on stress, how it affects individuals and how to stay calm, cope and relax.

Inquiry

This term for Inquiry our focus will be Responsibilities, Rules and Laws. We will be focusing on why rules and laws are made and why decisions are made democratically in communities. We will be exploring what the local government does in our community and we will be visiting some local community services.

Physical Education

St John's has registered for the "Jump rope for heart" program so we have begun the term with a skipping program to build fitness, coordination and flexibility. More information will be coming out in the newsletter regarding the program and Jump Off Day. As we have district cross country on Wednesday 25 May for Year 3-6, skipping will be great preparation.

We also have a touch football program with an external coach booked and basketball clinics timetabled.

Homework

  • Daily reading and recording in reading records.
  • Reading Eggs
  • Mathletics - Tasks will be set in Mathletics relating to classroom topics to consolidate learning. It is not expected that students would complete all tasks in one sitting.
  • Additional tasks may be given to support students learning in core subjects
  • Students will be required to complete all compulsory activities and the free choice activities, continuing the same structure they are familiar with.

Classroom Helpers

If you would like to volunteer as a parent helper and have completed the induction process with Melinda, please let us know. We would also like to remind everyone that we encourage students not to bring nuts to school due to allergies in the classroom.

Specialists

Students will have specialist classes on Thursdays (please see timetable below). They will be required to wear their sport uniform on Tuesday and one other day. Students will also need to bring in their library bag and books on their designated library day.
