Students learnt valuable lessons about chickens’ life expectancy recently. One of our old (in chicken years) and gorgeous Isa Brown chickens named Stephanie quietly went to sleep and didn’t wake up. RIP Stephanie. Now we are left with five lovely girls who are finding lots of hiding spots to lay their eggs. Each day is an egg hunt because they lay in the compost heap, behind the bushes, in the potato patch and sometimes behind the quiet corner behind the garden bed.

In the garden, we had so much success with our tomato and zucchini crop. We experimented with growing zucchini on a stake by cutting off lower leaves so all the energy can go to developing better fruit. This certainly worked well. We also harvested the last few corns and added these to our menu of Nachos, Corn Salsa, Zucchini and Corn muffins and Zucchini Tomato Pasta. Read our 4C students comments below:

Today we made salsa out of corn grown in the school garden. We learnt that corn can grow up to 6 metres tall and it is the most important crop in the United States because it can be used in many different ways such as to feed animals and for humans to make different food. We used served our corn salsa with nachos and used mostly chives because we didn’t have any other herbs in the garden. Jaslynn

The strawberry group made zucchini muffins. We also added corn into our zucchini because we have them in the garden and it tastes yummy. With the corn we had to shave the kernels off the cob and we grated the zucchini. We used eggs from our school chickens. We whisked the eggs, added the flour and the fresh ingredients. Manny

We used a spiral grater to turn the zucchini into zucchini spaghetti. It was fun and satisfying to make really long veggie spaghetti. We used plenty of cherry tomatoes and cut them in half to make a sauce to serve with our pasta. Zac D
