What a first Term the Year 3’s have had. From their very first experience of the Swimming and Athletic carnivals to immersing themselves into Persuasive and Narrative writing. Their Maths has taken off with learning about place value, addition, subtraction, time, length, area and perimeter. The students have showed great resilience and have given 110% in their learning. With this being our final newsletter article of Term 1 and our final week of school coming up, we wish you a safe and restful holiday and we can’t wait to jump back in with the students for Term 2.
Maths:
Our Year 3 mathematicians have been hard at work applying their knowledge of different strategies to solve various Addition and Subtraction equations and worded problems whilst practicing place value, number patterns and fact families.
Our Year 3s have been learning about different types of measurement too, such as Length, Perimeter, Area and telling Time. They will continue to build on their learning in term 2 when we immerse students into Multiplication, Division, Mass & Capacity.
‘I have really enjoyed measuring things around the classroom.’ Jack 3A
‘ I liked working out the perimeter of regular and irregular shapes.’ Alexa 3A
‘It has become easier to tell the time after our time unit.’ Brendan 3A
Reading:
BLAST OFF! into the world of creativity. We have begun to explore Narratives and what authors do to make our stories interesting. Our students are investigating how authors have developed their characters, settings, problems and solutions. As we are reading, we are thinking about our connections to these stories, visualising what it would be like if we were a character and stepping through the events to verbally summarise the text. Students are loving the immersion and we encourage families to read nightly a range of fictional stories.
Writing:
The year 3’s have wrapped up persuasive writing and have now moved on to learning all about narratives. We have begun exploring the various elements that are in narratives including characters, problem, solution and setting.
During our First Peoples incursion, students explored creation stories and had a go at developing their own creation story. See some of their amazing stories below.
The Year 4 students have been working hard throughout the term as it quickly draws towards the end. Students are all eagerly awaiting our first incursion of the year later this week. Our First Peoples of Australia virtual reality incursion will wrap up our humanities unit for the term. Students are also looking forward to the Athletics carnival this week especially after last year’s event was affected by Covid and poor weather.
In Writing, students have wrapped up the persuasive writing unit and begun the narratives unit. Students are looking forward to letting their creative sides run free with this unit. In Maths, students have started a short unit on time. We are investigating how to read analogue and digital clocks as well as focusing on elapsed time. Students have really enjoyed the Science, Health and Humanities units and are looking forward to the incursion to top off a great term of learning. Crazy hair day was also a hit….see some of our awesome photos!
As the end of term is so close, a gentle reminder that homework has started for the year and students have already set high standards. This is a reminder to families that homework will be given out each Monday and will need to be returned on Friday, along with students reading each night and recording this in their diaries.
Congratulations to the following students for receiving their Superstar awards.

Dearest parents and guardians,
We are fast approaching the end of term and what a term it has been!
As we all look forward to a break, the grade five team would like to express our gratitude to all of you - parents, carers, children – for such a great start to the year. Whilst we have not had to go into lockdown, the interruptions have been many and the students have continued to show a great deal of resilience under the circumstances.
Reading:
We are currently working on making connections to the things we read about. These might be connections made to our own experiences, connections we make to other books we have read, or to what is going on in the world.
We’ve also been learning about word construction, using prefixes to help us understand the meanings of words.
Writing:
In writing, we have been learning how to describe exciting settings and in-depth characters to include in narrative writing. We have been practising using our new keyboards with the iPads so we will be familiar with these by the time we use them for NAPLAN.
Maths:
We have started two new units of work in maths - fractions and geometry. Here are some photos of the students enjoying a maths lesson on fractions, using M&Ms!
We teachers are so proud of the work that grade five students have been producing during this term.
From the grade five team, we wish you all a safe and fun holiday.
Dylan, Emelia, Jaime, Alysha, Ashleigh and Robyn.
In Thursday the 17th of March 2022, the year 6 cohort attended the Science Incursion. We participated in the ‘Living Things Workshop’, studying objects that use independent processes. This includes plants, animals and micro-organisms. We were also taught how to classify animals. Every one of use was encouraged to take part in the amazing interactive activities the expert from Mad About Science had organised for us.
Our first task was to sort a few items into two categories: ‘Living’ and ‘Non-Living’. One of the interesting things we learnt was that if an object comes from a living thing, but isn’t living at the moment, it still counts as living! For example, flour comes from wheat, which is a living thing. So that means that flour goes into the ‘Living’ category.
Another exhilarating task we had was to examine a variety of creatures, like bugs and small crabs. We used the magnifying glasses to observe if the creature has hair, a certain number of legs, wings and more!
The last activity we did before ending the magnificent science hour was a yeast experiment The Mad About Science expert combined a sachet of yeast with some icing sugar and warm water in a science flask. The next step was to attach a balloon to the opening. We needed to wait and watch for the reaction. Will the balloon pop?
At the end, it was a spectacular experience!!! A massive thank you to our awesome teachers for arranging the incursion and thank you to Mad About Science for visiting Brookside.
