Deputy Principal's update

STAFF UPDATE

Karyn Downie has made the decision not to continue in her role as class teacher of room 7. Karyn will be returning to TRT work and will work across several schools.

We welcome Kelly Bria. Kelly comes to us from Cummins Area School and brings with her a wide range of skills and experiences. She has a passion for working with JP students and will share the room 7 class with Sarah Robertson.

Welcome to Kimberly Butcher who has joined our Learning Support team. Kimberly will back fill some of Kate Lewis’ hours – working in room 3 to support identified students. She will also work individually with some of our Aboriginal students to provide additional support in Literacy. Monica Turner will return for the rest of the year providing support for identified students, mainly in JP classes.

Welcome to Ivy Benbolt. Ivy has joined our Aboriginal Education Team as our ACEO.

TEACHING AND LEARNING

In Week 7, the Year 6 students had an enjoyable day at Aquatics at West Lakes. The weather was ideal and along with a couple of other small school, our students spent their time acquiring new skills like kayaking, sailing, and surfing. Then in Week 8, the R-5 classes had their week of swimming at the Payneham swimming centre which was successful. Again, the weather was good for most days, and we were the only school on site during the program.

We have also selected our 2022 Student Pillars who have the role of representing our school at the partnership level to be involved in our journey of school improvement. Their training day has been postponed until next term, but the four Pillars have already had a dabble in leadership by hosting the Harmony Day celebration. Congratulations to Anhad, Matin, Lida and Zenisa for gaining these roles – they will be excellent representatives and role models for our school.

Last Thursday, the students of Room 18 participated in a Leadership Day where they were trained in skills for the Student Leader teams of STEM, Sustainability, Wellbeing and Whole School Events.

In Week 11, we will close out the term with a Student Free Day with a focus on STEM and Inquiry Learning. These are areas where I have a lot of experience to share with our staff as they look to provide enhanced learning opportunities for our students in these areas. Looking ahead to next term, we will have NAPLAN testing during Week 2 for our Year 3 and 5 students. Except for Year 3 Writing, all these tests will be conducted online.

I hope all families have a restful break and students come back refreshed for another term of learning.

Regards

Graham
