Design Technology & Textiles Update

Design Technology

This Term students from Years 9-11 have been busy in the Makerspace.

Year 9 have successfully completed their wooden amplifiers, where they utilised some new tools and machinery learning and developing new skills and techniques. They also utilised the schools laser cutting machine to personalise and engrave their amplifiers.

It was awesome for students to finish and test their products to discover.... THEY WORK!

Also this Term, Year 10 have partnered up with Whittlesea Tech School to learn about Urban Farming and Aquaponic systems through their design challenge Autocrops! Students will be visiting Whittlesea Tech next term to prototype their design ideas around improving urban farms and the Aquaponic systems.

As an extension and skill building task, Year 10 were also able to learn about filetypes, specially eps. files or svg. files in order to design vinyl stickers or laser cute objects.

Some students made keys rings, earrings, badges and hair clips!

Year 10 with the help of our onsite Carpenter and Tech Support person learnt about joinery by creating a box that involved 4 specific joins.

The students learned how to do a Biscuit joint, finger joint, butt joint and a rebate joint. Some students created shelving out of their box, where others added drawers!

The Year 11 students in Unit 1 were given the task of redeveloping the Kmart basic camp chair @ $5.50 for a more sustainable solution. This week has been lots of fun with the prototypes for the two bench finalists being constructed.

Textiles

Year 9 Textiles students are having fun making felt monsters at the moment. They are taking the basic sewing skills they learnt in making their drawstring bag to the next level.
