Science Update

Term 1 Science at Edgars Creek - Lego coding, Dissections and more!

The Science team in 2022 have been hard at work creating hands-on, engaging learning experiences for our students, to ensure their return to onsite learning is a success!

Term 1 has had a number of incredible learning opportunities for students from year 7 - 11. Below are some examples of our students hard at work:

Science Help Club

Every Wednesday Lunchtime, Science Help Club has been running for year 7 - 11 students. It has been amazing to see students using their lunch time to seek extra support, build their study skills and work collaboratively with their peers.

Year 7 - Introduction to Science

Year 7 students have been learning all about the scientific method and states of matter.

Students have had the opportunity to participate in a range of hands on activities. One crowd favourite was the "Stretching Lolly Snakes" experiment. Students applied their knowledge of Scientific Variables to determine which brand of lolly snake is the stretchiest (Coles brand if you are wondering!)

Year 8 - Cell Models and Dissections

Year 8 students have started the year with their Biology topic on Cells and Body Systems.

The assessment for this unit had students create a 3D Cell Model! Students worked incredibly hard on this task and created some fantastic models!

The body systems saw students participate in their first ever dissection. Year 8 students completed a heart dissection. Year 8 students demonstrated the school values of Embrace Learning and Respect All by participating in the dissection to an incredibly high standard.

We are very proud of how year 8 students have embraced their learning in Science this year.

Year 10 - Lego Space Challenge Selective

Year 10 students have been hard at work in their selective classes. Below are some examples of the awesome creations students have built and coded.

Shout out to Ali Sadeghzadeh (10A) who created and coded a colour sorter. Check out the video below to see this fantastic creation. Great work Ali!

Year 11 - First ever VCE Science SACS!!

Year 11 Biology students participated in their first ever science SAC this term. Students were investigating how surface area to volume ratio was affecting the rate of diffusing of sulfuric acid into agar blocks. It has been incredible to see our Year 11 students engage with their learning and build their experimental skills.
