Students Work With Interior Designers

OPEN LEARNING SPACES
Designed by students!
Last year, the grade 5’s and 6’s were given the opportunity to participate in a project to design the open learning spaces around the school. Students who were interested participated in a meeting to find out more information and then we were connected to an interior designer designated to each design team group.
‘I immediately jumped at the opportunity because I was interested in colours, objects and how these can change a space and its purpose. We met Rose, our interior designer, online during the lockdown so our first few meetings were about the purpose of the area, who would be using it and then the measurements.’
We were so interested we wanted to work throughout the school holidays, so we kept our weekly meetings online and started researching furniture options and making sure they fit in the budget. The hardest part was keeping within the budget, while getting what we wanted.
It was also hard because we were designing the area for the preps, so we had to remember what it was like when we were their age. The best part was when the furniture started arriving and we moved it around in different places to see what it looked like’.
This was an incredible learning experience because we got to put maths into a real situation by measuring, budgeting and creating diagrams with our draft designs.
This was an opportunity I enjoyed because seeing the journey from the beginning to what we ended up with at the end, was something we were all really proud of.
We really want to thank Rose from the Holmesglen TAFE for her belief in us and for her design knowledge, which made us realise all the practical things we had to think about throughout the process.
