Hair Raising Science

Teacher:  Emily Beale

In 1971, Robert J Van de Graaff invented the Van de Graaff generator. He invented it for the sole purpose of generating high voltages for use in nuclear physics experiments. Students in year 7 science classes have been learning about electrostatic forces and how the movement of electrons cause an object to become charged.

Jacob Haggett demonstrates how the Van de Graaff generator has caused electrons to move into his body and to the end of his hair as they try to get away from the machine, causing his hair to stand up.
