Celebrating the growth in our wonderful children on each learning level...
This week the Prep students have been busy creating a lovely present for Mothers Day. Linking perfectly to our unit on Community, one student shared that the most important person in their community is their mum!
We couldn't pass up the opportunity to celebrate our wonderful mums. The students have been creating personalised plates and gift bags. The students have been busy drawing and colouring before and after lessons to make the perfect gift for their mum.
We wish all of the South Melbourne Primary School mums, grandmothers and special adults, a wonderful Mother's Day!

This week in Grade 1 we have been learning about communities in Humanities. Students have been learning about the South Melbourne community and essential buildings. On Wednesday students created their own paper community in teams. We applaud them for their creativity and team work during this task.

This term in Science the Grade 2 students are learning about organisms and their habitats. We'll be looking at life cycles of plants and animals and investigating what they need to survive. We are conducting an experiment to understand what pea plants need. This week we planted pea seeds and over the coming weeks we will place them into different locations to see which ones grow and why. Watch this space!

In Grade 3, we have kicked off our new Science unit on Life Cycles by planting seeds in order to observe the life cycle of the plant. We planted radish seeds and used egg cartons, a compostable material, to plant the seeds in. We are excited to monitor our seeds over the coming weeks to observe how they grow.
Here are some thoughts on Science from some of our Superstar Grade 3 students:
“I like Science because this term we are learning about plants and animals and I love plants and animals. I like plants because they’re very pretty and they can sometimes have flowers on them. At home, we have a lot of plants and we have bamboo as well. I am excited for my plant to grow in class because I want to see what it will look like!” - Tyler, 3B
"I like Science because we are learning about many types of animals and their life cycles. We do lots of fun activities on Seesaw and on paper. I also liked the planting we did. We planted radish seeds and watered them." -Srithik, 3C
"I enjoy learning about the life cycles of animals and plants. I learnt new things about animals like how the are born and how they grow." - Ella, 3A
"I am excited for science this term and I cant wait to see my radish grow. I wonder if we can plant other things." - Mia, 3D

In Grade 4, we have started learning how to write an imaginative text. This has involved writing character descriptions, creating similes and metaphors, developing the setting, using direct speech and so much more! It has been great to use our new novel called 'Podkin One Ear' as an example of an imaginative text. We are completely hooked on it!

In the last 2 weeks Grade 5/6 students have started an exciting new Science topic, ‘Reversible and Irreversible Changes’. Students are excited to learn about chemical reactions and participate in some experiments later this term. We have also begun learning about Making Democracy in our Humanities unit and have had some great discussions about what makes a good community.
5/6 students have been enthusiastic to get back into the routine of completing Mathletics homework and reading at home. They have set themselves some great targets to achieve throughout the term, and we look forward to celebrating their progress!
