Literacy Programme Update

Hi everyone, our Year 7-9 students have worked diligently this term to improve all facets of their reading and their comprehension skills and we thank them for their enthusiasm and hard work.

In the Decoding groups, students have been finding the main idea of a text, recalling facts and details and have been exploring the different forms of nouns.

Transition students have been using reading strategies that focus on comprehension, text structure, vocabulary development and organisational patterns such as sequencing.

In Comprehension classes, students have been applying the skills of Reciprocal Teaching: predicting, clarifying, questioning and summarising when reading an unfamiliar text, in addition to practising their deductive reasoning skills in their ‘Comprehension Detectives’ activities.

Those in Critical Literacy have read excerpts from classic Australian authors/poets such as Henry Lawson and A.B. ‘Banjo’ Paterson and pondered over whether Ned Kelly should be considered a hero or not. Students have been applying their knowledge of literal and inferential questions as they explored the history of chocolate, Anne Frank’s diary and the world of Atticus Finch.

Have a relaxing break and we look forward to seeing you in Term 4.

Thanks,

Ms Sue Phillips
