Year 7 Economics –

Scarcity, Supply & Demand

In Year 7 Humanities, students have begun their unit on Economics. As part of their learning, students are exploring the concepts of scarcity and supply and demand. To demonstrate these concepts, students took part in a game where they had to use limited resources to buy supplies to satisfy their needs and wants.  The students worked in teams of 5. We had 4 - 5 teams of buyers and 1 team of sellers. The teams of buyers had to decide how to use their resources to satisfy their needs and wants, while also ensuring they had enough available for future purchases. The team of sellers had to maximise their profits while allocating their resources in a thoughtful and sustainable manner in order to keep the market stable. The students really enjoyed the rich learning experience.

Chinese Classes on site

With the return to on-site learning, students were eager to jump into the next Chinese unit of reading and writing. Starting off at square one, students in Year 7 delved into the history of Chinese characters and how they have evolved over thousands of years. They drew connections between characters and the images they are based on, and even made their own quizzes to test each other. As an extension activity, students in Year 7 tried their hand at Water Calligraphy: a brush writing activity using traditional writing brushes and a water-reactive mat.

Year 8 students have started their unit with a focus on sentence structure and grammar. Working in groups, the Year 8s completed a race-against-the-clock activity where they had to sort characters for several rotations. Congratulations to Zach Bissett, Anna Harper, Abi Sathyaseelan, Atasha Aiolupotea and Shaelah Caruana who were able to finish the challenge sentence before the period ended.

It has been great to see the Junior School students showing such enthusiasm and involvement in Chinese this term. They have all come a long way since the start of the year.
