Chess

Mrs Chapman came across some chess action in UG3 this week when she dropped in on the O'Connor Chess Club. Thanks Mr McLeish for giving up your lunch hours most days to help these students hone their skills as well as have a wholesome activity to concentrate on and enjoy.

Debating

Our Junior Debating Team competed against Scotch College Oakburn, Tasmania on Tuesday.

The topic was "That our politicians should pass an IQ test for election". The O'Connor team narrowly were defeated but got a lot out of the experience.

We recently discovered the exciting news that ex-student Patrice Mahoney received an OAM in the Australia Day Honours List last year and was presented her award in a rescheduled ceremony this year.

Patrice attended St Mary's Primary (from 1981) and then O'Connor Catholic High School during her school days in Armidale.

Moving to Victoria in 1997, Patrice has spent close to 20 years promoting awareness and acknowledgement of Indigenous History and Culture in the Bass Coast area of Victoria. She has been recognised for her hard work with a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM).

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, only 4 people were allowed at the ceremony which meant that those in attendance were Patrices's mother Theresa Fletcher and three of Patrice's sons Jahdham,  Nicholas, and Anthony. Her youngest son Mangarri and daughter Keisha therefore were not able to attend.

The College offers our congratulations to Patrice and her extended family on such an important award and occasion.
