Bird Life - Serendip Sanctuary Excursion
Birdlife Serendip Sanctuary Excursion
On Thursday the 28th of November all members of the Explorer Club in years 1 to 4 experienced a sensational trip to the Serendip Sanctuary in Lara. This was an excursion organised and funded completely by the government organisation Birdlife. Birdlife has been operating in our school this year to teach our students how to identify Australian birds, survey their existence on our school property and build bird habitats to increase their population growth.
Set in the wilderness foothills of the You Yangs, Serendip Sancturay is a wildlife sanctuary for Australian birds and marsupials. The students enjoyed two activities including a wildlife tour with one of the Park Rangers and a mini-beast ponding exercise.
The tour led by the Ranger gave the students up close experiences with animals and learnt about their God given special roles in various Australian habitats. Theses included animals such as wallabies, bearded dragons, bustards, a brolga, masked owl, tawny frog-mouths, whistling kites and much more.
The second activity was a ponding activity run by the Birdlife staff where students completed a bug survey of one of the insect rich Sanctuary’s wetland areas. Here they collected bugs with baskets and nets, poured their findings into collection trays then catalogued the bugs into an ice tray for identification. This activity engrossed our students as they searched their bug identification sheets for an accurate match.
Both activities satisfied a range of learning areas in the Victorian curriculum in very unique ways but most importantly the day provided students with a deeper understanding and connection with the Australian environment. Here they learnt the important lesson of how God has created an ecosystem relationship between his animals and landscapes with the purpose of to sustaining each other. All students left the day with a great desire to return and learn more about God’s great creation. We are all so thankful to Alex from Birdlife for organising this excursion and the Birdlife donors who funded this great opportunity.

School Banking
Wyndham Christian College is excited to now offer the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program to all students. The school holidays is a great opportunity to arrange an account for your student to start saving in this way in 2020.
School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and develop good savings habits.
School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives a Regular Savers Contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution which is based on the number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year.
All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account.
You can open an account for your child in one of two ways:
1. Online
Visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account.
2. In branch
Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child, like a driver’s licence and birth certificate.
If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away. They just need to bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using their Dollarmites deposit wallet.
School Banking day will be Friday. Each week you need to hand your Dollarmite book with Deposit slip and stub completed to the classroom Teacher.

Bottle Top Collection - Envision
Well done and THANKS to all who have brought in bottle tops to contribute to Envision and their project that helps make 3D printed bionic hands and lots of other useful recycled products.
With our help and the contributions of hundreds of other organisations, they have achieved Phase 1; which was to collect 3 million bottle tops!!
Their collection warehouse is now completely full to the brim and they cannot take anymore bottle tops.
Envision is now able to move to Phase 2 – sorting bottle top colours, and manufacturing 100 hands.
So thank you again, and we look forward to our next exciting venture in 2020 that will contribute to our local community and beyond.
