Mock Trial

This week we had a group of eleven Year 11 & 12 students who successfully engaged in Round 1 of the 2022 Mock Trial Competition. Congratulations to the team on their one-point victory. The trial involved our students defending a Civil Motor Accident Case. In the lead up to the trial meetings were held to understand the case at hand, for the witnesses to learn their statements for trial and the case arguments to be formed by the barristers and solicitors. The girls worked well under the simulated mock court, objecting to Opposition’s examination, and developing strong closing statements. Overall, the case was tight, the girls presented well and defended the case with determination, winning by a mere one point, scoring 83/100.

This competition is run by the Law Society of SA and aims to bring the legal profession into closer communication with teachers and students in Secondary Schools, to remove some of the mystique surrounding the law and the legal profession. It also gives students a better understanding of how the South Australian legal system operates. The Competition encourages students to express themselves and to present an argument in a forum based on our adversarial legal system. Teams compete in a round robin competition for three rounds, with the four top scoring teams moving through to the semi-final. The two winning teams then compete in the Grand Final. Round 2 will take place on Tuesday 5 April in the Adelaide District Court.

Debating

We have now registered our teams for the 2022 competition. There will be six teams in the Junior School – the biggest number we have ever entered. Seven teams will participate in the Senior School. While this is fewer than last year, it is still pleasing to see many students commit to this activity. Programs for all teams will be available by the end of the term, with debates taking place throughout Terms Two and Three.

The Big Science Competition

Junior Sports News

Athletics

Our annual Athletics Carnival was held at the Athletics SA Stadium on Thursday, 3 March.

Tremendous team spirit, enthusiasm and collegiality was evident as the Loreto community united to celebrate physical activity, individual and team performances and House unity. The R–2 students participated in a variety of tabloid activities with a focus on the fundamental movement skills and athletic techniques they have been developing during their Physical Education lessons. Years 3–6 students participated in track and field events which have been the focus of their Athletics Curriculum. All students are to be congratulated for the manner in which they competed, challenging themselves to do their personal best.

Thank you to the Loreto staff and senior students for their assistance in their roles as officials on the track and in the field, the Property Services Department for the transportation and set up of equipment and the sport and house captains for all their hard work in organising and supporting their teams.

  • become confident and safe in aquatic environments
  • develop skills, knowledge and understanding directly related to water safety (survival and rescue skills)
  • explore, evaluate and make sound decisions about their own safety and the safety of others in aquatic environments

Winter Sport

The winter season of sport is fast approaching. Information outlining the Term 2 and 3 sports options for students in Years 3 to 6 will be emailed to all parents, together with the link to the online winter sport nomination form.
