Mock Trial
This week we had a group of eleven Year 11 & 12 students who successfully engaged in Round 1 of the 2022 Mock Trial Competition. Congratulations to the team on their one-point victory. The trial involved our students defending a Civil Motor Accident Case. In the lead up to the trial meetings were held to understand the case at hand, for the witnesses to learn their statements for trial and the case arguments to be formed by the barristers and solicitors. The girls worked well under the simulated mock court, objecting to Opposition’s examination, and developing strong closing statements. Overall, the case was tight, the girls presented well and defended the case with determination, winning by a mere one point, scoring 83/100.
This competition is run by the Law Society of SA and aims to bring the legal profession into closer communication with teachers and students in Secondary Schools, to remove some of the mystique surrounding the law and the legal profession. It also gives students a better understanding of how the South Australian legal system operates. The Competition encourages students to express themselves and to present an argument in a forum based on our adversarial legal system. Teams compete in a round robin competition for three rounds, with the four top scoring teams moving through to the semi-final. The two winning teams then compete in the Grand Final. Round 2 will take place on Tuesday 5 April in the Adelaide District Court.
Debating
We have now registered our teams for the 2022 competition. There will be six teams in the Junior School – the biggest number we have ever entered. Seven teams will participate in the Senior School. While this is fewer than last year, it is still pleasing to see many students commit to this activity. Programs for all teams will be available by the end of the term, with debates taking place throughout Terms Two and Three.
The Big Science Competition
The Big Science Competition is back and registrations are open now. A 50-minute, multiple-choice competition, the Big Science Competition isn't like other tests. It focuses on how students can use their science knowledge and critical thinking skills to solve problems, and provides the data in comprehensive reports linked to the Australian Curriculum.
The Big Science Competition can also lead to BIG opportunities for students. Sitting the Big Science Competition could lead to selection in science extension programs including Curious Minds and the Australian Science Olympiads.
All students in Australian high schools who sit the Big Science Competition have a chance to win one of four iPads*.
Here's everything you need to know.
Students can self-register via the below link. They can search and select our school from the dropdown - https://australianscienceinnovations.force.com/portal/s/bsc-application-form
