Year 4 and 5 Camp

QCCC Mapleton

The Year 4 and 5 students and teachers had a wonderful experience at Mapleton last week. Students were empowered to embrace activities such as crate climbing, canoeing, climbing 11m to experience the flying fox, archery and raft building. Throughout each activity, the students encouraged each other, worked together and communicated effectively to support one another along the way. Our camp instructors guided us to be humble, respectful and generous and to be the change we wanted to see in the world. A heartfelt thank you to Mrs. Bailey and Mrs. McFarlane for their support on camp.

Year 4 Camp Reflections

My favourite activity was Van Diemen’s Land. It was very interesting feeling how people were treated years ago and it made me realise how lucky we are to be living in these times. Also, I really loved the feeling of flying on the giant swing!

My favourite activity was canoeing because I liked going on a boat and holding a paddle for the first time! We got to row past the buoy. A buoy tells us where to canoe and not canoe. The best part of canoeing was getting my shoes wet.
Aarav

My favourite activity was definitely the giant swing. The way to do it is you had to climb a ladder, then hold on to a rope. My classmates pulled another rope and I went up as high as I wanted. When I let go of the rope I swung side to side.

Last week my class and I went glamping at Mapleton. We stayed at Harrison Lodge for two nights and three days. It was AMAZING! In the end, I didn’t want to go home and see Mummy and Daddy even though I missed my family so much! For people to work best as a team they need to communicate with each other but not at the same time. I learned with canoeing that you have to communicate with each other to turn or move forward.
Sophie

At mealtimes, we got to sit next to whomever we wanted! The best part is the dessert. My favourite one was chocolate cake with cream on top and sprinkles. All the food at camp was so good and delicious.

Year 5 Camp Reflections

My favourite activity was getting to the top of the climbing wall. I reached the highest point and was very nervous as I looked down. My classmates encouraged me and I was able to trust my team and return safely to the ground.
Vera

I loved the flying fox. I challenged myself to climb the tree and step off the ledge at the top. The flying fox was very high; however, the ride was awesome. That was my first experience on a flying fox and I am so pleased I had the opportunity.
Renee

Swimming at camp was great fun. We made a whirlpool, slid down the waterslides and played water games with our friends. It was a nice way to end a very busy day.
Zara

I enjoyed canoeing with my friends. Steering and paddling the canoe in the right direction was challenging at first. After mastering the paddles we were experts at managing our canoes. We did not capsize.

National Day Against Bullying

This Friday 18 March is the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence. Statistics show that one in five students report being bullied. Bullying can happen in person or online and can be obvious or covert. The impacts of bullying on student wellbeing are far-reaching and long-term; from feelings of isolation, loneliness and sadness, to mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, to increased risk of self-harm and suicide-related behaviour. Intervention is important for everyone involved, including bystanders.

Kindness is a key element for bullying prevention and encourages acceptance, inclusiveness, and a sense of belonging. A culture of kindness promotes positive relationships, increased empathy for others and deeper connections. The theme for the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence for 2022 is Kindness Culture. On Friday, we will invite students to participate in a kindness challenge, where they will reflect on what it means to be kind and how they demonstrate kindness to others. Students will then be encouraged to action their ideas throughout the day.
