VALE  James Petrie

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of beloved teacher James Petrie last weekend.    While it has been a difficult week, it has also been a time to reflect on the legacy that James leaves behind - both personally and professionally.  We feel privileged to have known and worked with James at Ballarat High School.

James joined us in 2012 after graduating from the University of Ballarat with a Bachelor of Education (PE/Health).  From the start of his time with BHS, James impressed us with his commitment and drive. He was an exemplary teacher in his chosen subject area, he had a genuinely kind and empathetic nature  and made connections with staff and students alike. As a member of our school community, we could not have asked for more.

James became an important part of our VET Sport & Recreation program, completing extra qualifications to deliver the nationally accredited curriculum and being a key leader and mentor for the many young people who have studied this program.

James' leadership skills were clear early in his career when he took on roles such as Camps Coordinator, Daily Organiser and both junior and senior Team Leader roles.  To each of those positions James brought a high level of commitment to achieving his best, supporting students and staff and learning more each and every day.

James was promoted to Learning Specialist to lead the VCAL program area.  This important program has seen students move into vocational pathways post secondary school. James was always focused on ensuring that students had the resources they needed to find success in a supportive environment.  The foundations that James put in place for the VCAL program still support its success today. The VCAL Leadership camp that occurred this week, recognised and celebrated all that James achieved.

One of the highlights of his time at BHS was James' creation and leadership of the 2019 Kokoda Trail trip.  This amazing experience only came about through James' passionate belief that it would offer our students the experience of a lifetime and his commitment to making it happen.  Together with Shane Mathison and Jane Douglass, he led the tour group to walk the Kokoda track, learn the ANZAC story and experience the culture of PNG. James always spoke so positively of the relationships that were forged on the tour and we know that those who attended will also have amazing memories of their time.

James' commitment to Outdoor Education and Physical Education saw him heavily involved in activities and excursions at the school.  It was his enthusiasm that led to the acquisition of a class set of mountain bikes, following a grant application and funding campaign (Pick my Project). These are now a key part of our year 9 and 10 outdoor education programs.

It was his ability to see opportunities, the commitment to pursue them to success and the way that he worked with students and staff that won him so many admirers. His work with the White Ribbon and the Walk Off The War Within programs came through his belief that by taking action, positive change could be achieved.

The relationships James established across the school and in the wider community are a testament to this amazing person.

James was above all a great "bloke".  Known as "Peach" to many. He will be remembered and sadly missed.

RIP James
