Library News

The library has been a hive of activity throughout Term 1, and it is fabulous to see students connecting with the library in a way they weren’t always able to during the last two years.

In early March, we celebrated International Women’s Day by running a lunchtime Kahoot based around inspirational women. It was terrific to see so many enthusiastic students participating in this fun event. Congratulations go to Avni, Hannah B. and Ethan L. of Year 7 for coming first, second and third consecutively out of a competitive field.

Students at recess and lunchtime are continuing to appreciate our games and activities and it is great to see students enjoying their free time in fun and collaborative friendship groups. This term we have run two very popular lunchtime activities. The first one was a ‘Jigsaw puzzle challenge’ and the second an ‘UNO playoff’. The ‘jigsaw puzzle challenge’ was received well by students with a large contingent of keen participants turning up to take part. Teams were allocated on the day, and it was wonderful to see students from a range of Year levels working together to be the first team to finish their puzzle. UNO is one of our most popular games borrowed at lunchtimes and it is not uncommon to see up to six or seven games in process at one time. The library staff thought they would take advantage of the popularity of this card game, and we ran the ‘UNO play off’ competition over a number of lunchtimes. After many rounds, and in a close fought final game, the eventual winner of our first ‘UNO playoff’ was Maheen F. Year 8. Thanks to Miss Montalto for running these lunchtime activities.

Our school is a proud Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge (VPRC) school, and we support all Year 7 and Year 8 students to participate in the challenge as well as any interested Year 9 and 10 students. The library staff have been busy working on our wider reading program based around encouraging students to experience success in the VPRC. We started with a game to remind students of the educational benefits of regular and sustained reading. It was terrific to see the excitement with which the students engaged with the activity and the enthusiastic way students started reading and borrowing novels.

With the cooler months ahead of us, students are reminded that, the library is open before school, recess, lunchtime and after school until 4:30 Monday to Thursday and 3:30pm on a Friday.

We look forward to an exciting Term 2 with many more library activities and programs planned.
