Term 2

Library

Prep students are encouraged to borrow books from the Library. The focus will be on reading for enjoyment, interest and information. The children will have the opportunity to practise their borrowing skills and further their love of reading. 

 

 

 

 

The Library program also supports and extends the units of inquiry being studied in each year level and provides classrooms with resources to enrich the units offering varied forms of information 

 

  Visual Arts

The Term 1 Unit of Inquiry is called “Art Elements”, which integrates with the Transdisciplinary theme- “How We Organise Ourselves”. Looking at the Concepts of Function and Causation, the students focus on - line, mark making, pattern and colour, using a variety of art materials.  

 

 

Students participate in- 

  • Experimenting with mark making and line drawing. The students explore marks made by the side and other parts of the oil pastel to create Tibetan Butter Sculptures, inspired by ‘Losar’ the Tibetan New Year. The students design, paint and incorporate their experimental mark making to add a decorative element. 
  • Colour mixing Primary Colours to create Secondary Colours- Introduce with colour books ‘Vashti’s Dot’ and ‘Colours’. The students experiment and explore colour mixing and shape with a variety of art materials. 
  • They use the result from the colour mixing experiment to collage and draw a final artwork, inspired by the Spanish artist Miro. 

Physical Education

Preps:  “How we organise Ourselves” and “Who we are” 

  

Students look at the concepts of Responsibility and Form through the following  

 

 

Form 

  • Working together as a group showing respect and cooperation with others. Being principled and caring for each other by being involved in Team building games and parachute activities. 
  • Movement within specific areas in an external environment, adhering to rules, working together using various types of equipment as used in our Hockey Clinic. 

  

Responsibility 

  • Safety in physical education classes, awareness of other children in the class. Movement patterns indoors and outdoors. 
  • PMP Program to develop eye tracking, eye/hand/foot coordination, balance, bilateral cross patterning. Auditory processing and fitness. 

 Music

PYP Unit of Inquiry : 'How We Express Ourselves' and 'Who We Are'

 

Focus: To establish class routines and learning, by encouraging an attitude of participation, independence and care towards each other. Students will increase their knowledge of music as the elements of Beat, Pitch, Dynamics and Tempo are introduced. 

 

The students will: 

  • Understand how music affects our emotions and how different music may affect thoughts and behaviours.  
  • Sing songs related to the unit of inquiry: e.g. The Sharing Song, The Marching Song and Look This Way. 
  • Investigate ways to improve their singing and play instruments correctly. 
  • Take part in action rhymes and games where each child has a leadership role.  
  • Show respect by learning to look after classroom instruments. 
  • Demonstrate correct behaviours for being a “performer” or “audience member”.  
  • Learn new music vocabulary. 
  • Listen and respond to music through movement.  
  • Listen and appreciate music from different cultures. 

Japanese

Term focus: Greetings, Japanese alphabet/writing style, Classroom instructions, Numbers, Introducing myself and Origami 

 

 

 

 

The students will be able to: 

 

*know how to greet the teacher and know about Japan (SENSEI, Japan(ese) around them) 

*know how to greet and farewell the teacher ( KONNICHIWA, SAYONARA) 

*trace Japanese alphabet for their name. 

*trace and spell KONNICHIWA and SAYOONARA in HIRAGANA 

*understand yes and no in Japanese. 

*respond to teachers instructions in Japanese. 

*spell “Stand up” and “Sit down” in HIRAGANA. 

*count 1,2,3 in Japanese. 

*spell 1,2,3 in KANJI (一、二、三) 

*introduce myself in Japanese. (name) des. 

*understand what ORIGAMI is and try out an animal origami.
