Biology Unit 3 (BEST)

Students in Unit 3 Biology have been studying DNA manipulation techniques. This week they got the opportunity to practice loading a gel electrophoresis machine with DNA samples using micropipettes. Students were then able to view the fluorescently-stained bands to observe how DNA fragments of differing lengths move through the agarose gel. From this, they could then create a DNA profile.

Next week students will be completing a pGreen bacterial transformation practical. This involves transforming bacteria (E. coli) with a gene from Aequorea victoria; a bioluminescent jellyfish. If successful, the green fluorescent protein (GFP) of the Aequorea victoria will be expressed in the bacteria; causing them to glow bright green under UV light.
