Parent / Teacher / Student Conferences

The Junior School team would like acknowledge all the families who attended the conferences on Monday 7 September.

Although it was a new experience with conferences taking place via WebEx, it was a resounding success and fantastic to check in with many of our students and families during this time of remote learning. In particular, we wish to express our gratitude to those families who took the time to check in with our staff and acknowledge the hard work that our teachers have been putting in during this time.

Reading Program

A fantastic initiative that has taken place over the past few weeks is our Primary School Reading Program. The Junior School acknowledges the importance of providing students with opportunities to engage in schooling outside of the classroom. The Reading Program gave seven of our junior school students the opportunity to read some short stories to students from Knox Park PS and Kent Park PS.

We would like to thank and congratulate the following students who got involved with the program:

Angie Norton, Mikayla Rogers, Anna Harper, Josh Zammit, Matias Obregon, Paige Corvell and Amy Mitcham.

Here is a reflection on the program from year 9 student Paige Corvell:

The reading program was an amazing experience. We logged onto a WebEx with Grade 1/2 and read a book to them during their reading time. After we read the book, we helped the students with answering questions and answered any questions that they had about high school. I think that doing the reading program was fun for both the primary kids and us, because it gave us an opportunity to meet some new faces during remote learning. I loved doing the reading with the little kids and I hope that I can have another opportunity to do this again!

Alpine School Leadership In 2021

Scoresby Secondary College has been given another opportunity to apply for a select few students to attend the Alpine School Leadership Camp. This experience offers year nine students the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and take part in leading a team-learning project. It is a fantastic opportunity for students who wish to challenge themselves, build on their leadership skills and make new and exciting memories. Any current year 8 student who is interested in applying is encouraged to contact Mr Knight for an application.

Remote Learning

Remote learning has required our students to turn their homes into classrooms and appropriate study spaces. In the last newsletter, we were lucky enough to gain an insight into how the Junior School team has spent their time whilst teaching remotely. This week, many of our students have sent in photos depicting their new classrooms at home

Mathematics

Our students have been working extremely hard during remote learning. Year 7-9 students completed a differentiated assignment where they choose a concept to teach. Students created a video/PowerPoint to teach a concept. Students were very creative, some used whiteboards other made youtube tutorials. One student made a youtube video whilst incorporating teaching another student via zoom. I must say we have some amazing potential teachers. Students not only increased their Mathematical knowledge but also developed ICT skills.

We have seen some significant growth in the concept Patterns and Algebra for year 7-9 students. We celebrate growth in Mathematics. The following students received “Growth Certificates:

  • Robson Sorensen-Salman
  • Mitchell Steenhuis
  • Susitina Von heiderbrant
  • Loren Watson
  • Maya Faddoul
  • Madeline Willems
  • Maddison Gardner
  • Will Davies
  • Blake Fricke

Numeracy and Literacy Week

Scoresby Secondary College celebrated Numeracy and Literacy Week. Students were involved in a range of activities including: “World Letter Writing Day”, “I AM WATER” writing competition, Indigenous Literacy Day, Primary School reading program and family Numeracy challenges. It was fantastic to see students getting involved in other aspects of the School Community. During this unprecedented time students were able to connect with local residents from Arc Care by writing letters. Families at home got involved in the Numeracy challenges and students were able to enjoy beautiful animated dreamtime stories.
