Snapshots from the Primary Classrooms

Prep

To extend on the interest in their Goldilocks re-tellings last term, the Prep students have been creating their own Bluey episodes to film.

Focusing on the basic elements that stories include, in their organised small groups, they have been planning which characters will be included, the setting and outlining the plot.

This integrated project focuses on English, Drama and requires team work and cooperation. The students look forward to sharing their completed work soon.

Year 3

The Year 3 students have been busily seeking answers to the question of what is the history of our local environment.  In order to understand what our local environment would have looked like for the Mouheneener People, they visited Lambert Park to gain an understanding of the plants and wildlife of our local area some 200 years ago.

Along the way to Lambert Park, the Year 3 students stumbled across headstones of graves previously occupied by local identities of Sandy Bay and Hobart.

Year 4

Last week, the Year 4 students thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to explore TMAG’s Island to Ice exhibit as part of their unit of work, Life in the Freezer.  The students’ understanding of the wild Southern Ocean, the remote sub-Antarctic islands and the icy expanse of Antarctica was certainly enhanced by the opportunity to explore the exhibit.  The students discovered what motivates people to go south over the course of time, what explorers charted and claimed and some amazing discoveries by scientists.  Furthermore, what it is like to live and work in Antarctica, one of the most hospitable climates on earth, was also unpacked. For many students, the highlight was investigating the animals, their lives and habitats.

In the coming weeks the students will continue expanding their knowledge in order to complete a STEM activity as a culminating performance for the unit.  Thank you to the parents who accompanied the students in addition to Mrs Jan Peterwood and Mrs Hedwig Hill.

Year 5 White

There is a new member of 5W, and her name is Sticky McStickface. She is a young spiny leaf stick insect who is helping the students learn about animal adaptations and responsibility.

These mini beasts are a perfect classroom pet - they do not smell, they do not make noise, they do not cause allergy flare ups and they do not bite.

Year 6 - Make Jesus Real Day

Do you ever wonder how you can live the Gospel values of Jesus?

Well, Marty Ogle will be able to show you. He epitomises what it means to live out these values in life and is always willing to share through his Making Jesus Real program.

Last week Marty came to Mount Carmel College and visited the Year Six classes to talk to us about the values and importance of the ‘Spirit of Jesus’ moments we experience, and how we can continue to display these important lessons and acts in all we do and say.

Marty talked to us and showed us how we can embrace and show empathy and respect, and be proud to live out our God moments, whilst of course, performing a magic trick here or there.  His visits to work with us as a Year 6 are always well received, and the time spent with us recently was equally exciting.  Our Year 6 community absolutely strived to make the best of every opportunity we had on this day.  It allowed us to open up as a class and recognise the good that is in all of us and that in order for us to move forward as a year group we have to maintain and strengthen our bonds as a ‘family’.

Again we were given the opportunity to use our MJR books, which offer more than 50 attitudes and values that supported us on the day.  The book in itself is an encouraging and wonderful resource for us all. It's simple messages hold a strong, powerful message of living like Jesus and always having a good attitude to life -  a guide for life.

Our day with Marty allowed us to focus on how we can change our perspective on everything we do and how we can change a situation by changing our mindset.  Marty encouraged us as a Year group to change any situation or problem at any place or any time by simply saying ‘OK’ with a smile.  This is just one of Marty's favourite phases.  We drew an ‘OK’ on the back of our hand then putting a smiley face inside the ‘O’. This acts as a reminder to us all and reminds us how easy it is to say ‘OK’.

On behalf of all of the students at Mount Carmel in Year 6 we believe we can speak for everyone when we say Marty’s visits are always one of the biggest highlights of our year, and honestly changes our perspective as we head towards Year 7. Although this year has been a rollercoaster of a year as a 6 Navy or 6 White student,  we can all agree that Marty is an amazing role model for students here at the College, he has put a ‘spring in your step’.  As we move towards the end of the year we will take Marty’s advice and show leadership, show empathy, be kind and always just say with a smile of course, ‘OK’.
