Year 6 Leaders Reflections

On Monday 6 March, our 15 Year 6 Leaders from South Plympton and Brooklyn Park attended the ‘Dream and Lead' Primary Conference at the Adelaide Convention Centre with Youth Leadership Academy of Australia. Below are some of their reflections from the day:

"On March 6, all of the Emmaus Year 6 Student Leaders went to the Grand Chancellor Hotel to meet other schools surrounding Adelaide and to talk about leadership.

Leadership is when someone steps up to inspire and influence others and themselves.

The 'Dream and Lead' Conference, run by the Youth Leadership Academy of Australia, was an amazing opportunity to meet other student leaders and to discuss the meaning of leadership and how to show effective leadership.

We met the first ever woman to conquer all 7 summits of each continent (Katie Sarah) and an International body builder (Kwami Duan), who have both shown incredible leadership.

We learnt that, to show leadership, you have to feed the lion of courage and not the lion of fear. I learnt that there are 3 pieces to communication, 7% is words, 38% is tonality and 55% is body language.

We were so blessed to have a warm welcoming space from the rain and wind."

 - Diana, Emerald Year 6 Leader

"What I liked about the leadership meeting was that they made the event engaging. They taught about what leaders do and how to be a good leader. One thing that stood out to me is the quote that Wil Massara said. I don’t really remember the words, but I do know what it means. It means that no matter what age you are, you can still be a leader, even if you are 68, 42, or 7-years-old."

 - Elijah, Topaz Year 6 Leader

"Thank you for taking us to the 'Dream and Lead' conference.

I had a great time meeting new people from different schools and learning more about them. I found the speeches very inspiring as it gives me confidence to get out of my comfort zone and move into my learning zone."

 - Amelie,  Emerald Year 6 Leader

"Something I remembered about the conference was something that Wil Massara said: 'Your age does not determine your ability to do extraordinary things.'

This is true and very inspiring. That's why it stuck."

 - Abbey, Topaz Year 6 Leader

"I really liked Katie Sarah's speech, because when she hurt her ankle it didn't let her down. She still wanted to train and she still worked hard and showed persistence in achieving her dream."

 - Angelina, Ruby Year 6 leader

"The thing that stuck with me yesterday was Katie Sarah's talk.

She inspired me by talking about how she had a foot injury, but she still climbed huge mountains and her dream became reality. Because she kept on trying and eventually got to her goal."

 - Eva, Ruby Year 6 Leader
