Year 7

Student experiences of starting Year 7 at Lilydale Heights College

I was excited to start secondary school this year, but I was a bit nervous about how everything worked as it is so different from Primary School.  The support we have been given, setting up our lockers, finding our way around the school and learning Compass has been brilliant and really helped.  The older students who I thought would be scary have been very friendly and helpful when I was lost or needed something.  I have loved all the extra activities that Lilydale Heights has offered me during lunch times! The lunch time clubs have something different every day. I have joined in doing Robotics, Production, Sustainability, games in the Library and Volleyball just to name a few!  I can’t wait for all the new experiences that are just around the corner!

So far my time at Lilydale Heights College has been very exciting and different. At first, I was really scared since it was a new place, and well, I went from a leader of the school to basically a prep again. I felt so tiny in this new school that by the last day of school on the first week, I was so exhausted from the change.  I was also really worried that I wouldn't be able to make friends as easily as in primary school. But after only a few more days, not only did I make new friends, I grew to really love this different school and the new teachers.  At primary school, Maths and Art were definitely not my strong suits, but after having one or two of those classes with the new teachers, I realised how much better I was at them than I thought!  Overall, Lilydale Heights has been such an extraordinary experience and I wish I came here a lot sooner!

Year 7 so far has been great. I have enjoyed new subjects and meeting new people. It was an environment that was very easy to get used to. The new opportunities to learn are great. The transition from primary school to secondary school was at some points a bit daunting, but it was an easier transition thanks to all the help we got on the first couple days.

The first few weeks of Year 7 have been really fun – I love hanging out with friends and other people at recess and lunch and the canteen food is yum. The work is not too easy but not too hard and most of the time it is fun. I’m also reading “The Black Phone” at the moment for the 20 minute Independent Reading and it is a great book. The Peer Support activities are also fun – I love being taught by students a little older than me. Also the lockers are great, mine is organised with folders so I can get my stuff quickly and go to class.
