YEAR 10 PEER SUPPORT TO YEAR 7 CAMP

What is Peer Support?

Peer Support is a program where we help introduce the Year 7's to secondary school. We act as their mentors and buddies, we are there to help if they are need anything and if they have any questions they can come to us. We meet the Year 7's every week and run sessions with them playing games and activities. Some activities we have done with them include playing kickball, captain ball, scattergories and activities to get to know them and help them open up.

We have seen a big progression with the Year 7's from the start of the year till now - they have become more confident and have made more friends!

The Year 10 Peer Support Leaders went on a trip to Phillip Island to visit the Year 7’s who were on camp. When first arriving at the camp, we joined in on the activities that were being held. Activities such as bike riding, flying fox, giant swing, swimming (at the heated pool), soccer, ultimate frisbee, archery and the circatron.

After the activities were finished, us Year 10's headed off to a playground right next to the beach and had lunch. After having our lunch and having some fun of our own on the playground, we set up our games and activities with the Year 7’s at the beach. The activities included sand art, beach volleyball, relays and the popular Ironman Challenge. The sun came out as soon as the Year 7’s got to the beach. Everyone had fun at the beach, but sadly we then had to pack up our activities and head home.

In my opinion, this was one of the best experiences in high school and I’m looking forward to more adventures like this!

The Year 7's participated so well and engaged in all activities and seemed to have heaps of fun. This vibe really helped Peer Support Leaders enjoy the day and have fun running activities. A few things that came off as challenging during this day were being able to change things on the spot and adapting to new things when original plans didn’t go as expected. Although this was challenging, Peer Support Leaders kept going and managed to create a fun, engaging day for students, teachers and each other.

The preparation from the Peer Support Leaders was fantastic - everyone brought what was needed for the day, everyone helped out with carrying all the equipment and helped pack up. When we got back on the bus to head back to school, both the Year 7’s and the Peer Support students were waving at each other and smiling, sad to say goodbye. It was such a great experience to be able to hang out with the Year 7’s. The bus ride home was even louder than on the way up, as everyone was singing and having a good time, enjoying being with each other. When we got back to school it was 6:45pm; everyone was tired but both the Peer Support students and the Year 7’s had an amazing day!!!!
