Meet Our College Captains

2023

Abigail Muigai, Liturgy Captain - Clyde North

What do you see as your role as a leader?

The role of a leader goes beyond the title, speeches and applause. I see that my role as leader is to take action and initiative, to motivate, to inspire but above all to be a friend. A friend that can be approached with any kind of problem/concern, a friend that will be a voice to your needs and input as well as a friend that leaves a smile on your face with every interaction. It means a lot to me knowing I have made a difference or positive impact/change on someone's day and I hope to carry that sense of purity and enthusiasm into my leadership role this year.

What is one of the positives about being a student at St. Peter's College?

The opportunities provided to help one grow in selected areas as a student in the college. I personally have made it a goal to strive in roles of leadership since being in year 7. I am grateful to have been presented with opportunities to take up roles and responsibilities within my house and the college community. I truly believe it has helped me gain confidence, skills and knowledge to take on a college executive role.

Who is the one person you admire most and why?

The one person I admire the most would be my mother. She has truly been an inspiration and guide that has shaped me to become the woman I am today. Being able to sacrifice all that she has whilst remaining humble and kind is one of the many ways my mother continues to inspire and motivate me. With the way she carries herself, her work ethic and pure kindness, she is my role model in whom I aspire to be more like each and every day. She is a reminder that all things are possible with hard work, effort and believing in one's self.

What are your goals as Captain in 2023?

My goals as Liturgy Captain 2023 is to give more understanding, see more involvement and improve attitudes towards the meaning of faith for our College. I see it as a blessing that there is great variation in cultural backgrounds and belief systems. Yet the commonality with all is the idea of love, respect, appreciation for others and all creation in which as a school we have outlined in the ROCKS and motto. Faith links to unity which is something I would love to see more of at St. Peter's College.

“Let your Light Shine” - Matthew 5:16

How will you live this statement through your leadership role?

I will take our beautiful college theme into practice by utilizing my strengths, gifts and talents for the growth and benefit of St. Peter's College. By letting my light shine, my hope is that others feel inspired to let theirs shine also.

What do you see as your role as a leader?

You first need to believe in the place/group or ideal you are leading. I’m proud to be a student at St. Peter’s College and being chosen as a student leader makes me want to represent the school in the best way possible, here and in the community. As liturgy captain, I participate enthusiastically in college events and encourage younger students to take pride in the values that St. Peter’s College promotes.

What is one of the positives about being a student at St. Peter's College?

A positive from being a student at St. Peter’s College is the friendly environment. Having been at St. Peter’s College for 6 years now, I can say with most certainty that if you ever need someone to talk to or sit with there will always be someone happy to have a chat. In saying this, I have met so many new people from branching out of my comfort zone in class and making lots of new friends along the way. I think our multi-age tutor groups and house system also make it easier to find friends and get to know many people, rather than just being limited to those in your year level or classes.

Who is the one person you admire most and why?

I admire my Mum the most as she inspires me to keep trying and pushing to reach my goals. Being a single Mum and raising me she has taught me everything I know, including how to stand up for myself and learn from my mistakes. She is the most hardworking person I know, having graduated from two universities with bachelors from both, one earned while I was just three years old, and now a successful teacher. She also worked overseas for several years and has taught me to take up every opportunity that comes my way, how to balance myself and stay organized. She is the reason I am where I am today.

What are your goals as Captain in 2023?

My goals as captain in 2023 are to encourage everyone to do their best and take every opportunity they can this year. As liturgy captain, my role is related to religion, organization of mass and other fundraising events, but it’s also in promoting our values of belonging. I was a student who came to St. Peter’s College only knowing a couple of other kids from my primary school, but I was made to feel part of the community right away.  I got involved in all the school activities and made new friends from joining in . It was great to have some familiar faces around from the older students in my tutor group and House. I hope I can be a friendly face for any younger students still finding their way this year.

“Let your Light Shine” - Matthew 5:16

How will you live this statement through your leadership role?

As Liturgy Captain I will work with my teachers and other captains  to find ways for everyone to use their own talents in our liturgies and fundraising events. These events need organizers, artists, writers, public speakers, cooks, people who want to be on stage and people who want to work in the background. If everyone has a chance to participate in our events in whatever way they feel comfortable, then everyone can shine their light.
