VCE Study Opportunities

Recently, our Year 12 students have participated in a study skills session presented by the organisation Elevate.  Elevate is an organisation that has researched the things that the highest scoring Australian students do in their study that have contributed to the outstanding results they have achieved.  A number of common strategies were discovered, and now the organisation runs workshops where they present these strategies to students. The students learnt the following key strategies:

  1. Use your study design to direct you in what to study, know what notes you should have and creates notes
  2. Take notes during term so that when you revise you only need to memorise and practise your notes
  3. Use loose leaf paper and a folder for your notes as ordered notes improve memory and you only need to take your notes once
  4. Pay attention to space and colour in note taking by using trigger words and colour
  5. Use a system of review
  6. Create mind maps
  7. Complete practice exam papers (at least 5 per subject)
  8. Do extra reading to expand your ideas

As the students are reminded of these strategies, they will be able to make the changes they need to improve their study and revision skills.

To further help our Year 12 students in their preparation for the final exams, the College is using the services of TSSM to run regular tutorials.  These occur on Wednesday afternoon, and upcoming tutorials are scheduled on 29 March for Psychology and Legal Studies.  These are capped at 10 students, so the first to register will receive the places.  All tutorials are recorded and can be accessed on the VCE Resources SPACE page.

Another opportunity that our Year 11 and 12 students can access is revision sessions run by Monash Virtual School.  These are free to participate in and are run for each science subject across Units 1-4 throughout the year.  Students can visit the VCE Resources SPACE page for a link to register.

Our Years 10 to 12 students of French language at the COMO cinema in the context of the French Film Festival

In the context of the Years 10, 11, 12 French course for this year, students studying French from both campuses watched a comedy, ‘Sugar and Stars – A la belle étoile’ by Sébastien Tulard at the Alliance Française French Film festival on Wednesday 21st March at the Como Cinema. Based on champion pastry chef Yazid Ichemrahem’s autobiography came an inspiring story of hope, great pastry, and triumph against all odds. Our students found it a feel -good film, prepared with a whole lot of soul.

The French cinema is a topic that VCE French students may have to talk about in the ‘interaction with the language and culture’ component of the VCE French oral examination. This also helps to deepen their cultural understanding and extend their linguistic capabilities.

Students were also allowed to taste French pâtisserie from the famous French pâtisserie ‘Laurent’.
