SAKG NEWS

As we are well into the term now the kitchen and garden have been a hive of activity.  There will be some changes with the timetabling of classes the next couple of weeks due to NAPLAN but all class should still occur.  In the kitchen, students from Grades 3-6 will be making sweet corn, zucchini and ricotta fritters, easy chocolate brownie and salad of the imagination (which is always a great way for students to show their creativity and an opportunity to try new vegetables). Grade 2s will be making Italian zucchini and parmesan soup, pizza muffins and pancakes. Grade 1s will also be making pizza muffins, but instead, accompanied by berry and banana smoothie.

In the garden lots of planting of autumn leafy greens has been taking place, including lettuce, spinach, rainbow chards and silver beet.  Classes have also been trialling planting snow pea seeds so it will be interesting to see if they take. Students have continued to harvest what remains of our summer crops, particularly tomatoes and corn. A focus has also been on the animals with students learning about the importance of cleaning the chickens' roosting boxes to ensure the eggs remain safe to use in the kitchen.

Due to the popularity of the garden during lunchtimes we have had to reduce the access to students just from Grades 3-6 at this stage. We do hope to offer to the junior grades later in the year with the hope that our older students can take on a buddy role and guide our juniors around the garden and show them all it has to offer. We will keep you posted on this.

A big thank you goes out to Mickey and Rob for all their hard work preparing hundreds of plants for the plant/bake/cake/produce stall at the Fete two weeks ago. It was a huge success with many of them selling. Mickey and Rob were very grateful to all those students who assisted with the carrying of plants around to the stall site – many hands make light work. We do have some plants left over so please look out at the café as they are available at a very small cost – gold coin donation.
