SELF CARE IN THE TIME OF COVID 19

Term 2 has begun in a very different world – a world of uncertainty, anxiety, stress, and rapid change. We are challenged to live differently in different ways – a new normal. We are all impacted and presented with the opportunity to take good care of ourselves and others.

While current circumstances and events are stressful, we can maintain a future focus with the hope that eventually this virus will pass. In the meantime, we have an opportunity to manage our stress in ways that enhance our mental, physical, and spiritual wellbeing.

The Gospels record Jesus’ frequently proclaiming, “Fear not” and “Do not be afraid”. This speaks to us now, in our current world. We do not need to be afraid of stress. It has always been a part of our human existence. Stress is essential to healthy development and essential to building resilience. Now is a time to build resilience. How we manage our stress determines whether stress is positive or destructive. It can bring out the best or the worst in us. To manage stress in a positive way we need to ensure we take good care of ourselves: -

  • Maintain a daily structure and routine.
  • Have meals together as a family.
  • Limit exposure to media – take time away from screen devices
  • Exercise frequently and well.
  • Reach out to others – we may need to practice physical distance but not social distance. Technology provides us with the opportunity to maintain social connections.
  • Look for opportunities to provide help to others.
  • Practice good sleep hygiene for good physical and mental health.
  • Stay positive with a future focus.
  • Make time to be still – pray - be calm – meditate – engage in mindfulness – be in the moment – be present to others – breathe deeply – practice gratitude.

The Guidance Counselling Team has published a PowerPoint presentation on the St Mary’s Website with relevant information and coping strategies for this time of change, with more tips for self-care and staying well, active, engaged and connected. External supports for parents and young people are also listed in the PowerPoint.
