Senior Girls AFL Schools Cup Success

St Mary's girls AFL team competed in the AFL schools cup at Watsons Oval on 3rd March and for the 2nd year in a row, the girls took out the cup.

There were two pools of four teams in the competition. In St Mary's pool were St Andrews, Trinity Bay SHS & Smithfield SHS.  We won all our pool games and went on to play Woree SHS, who were top of their pool, in the final.

It was a very hot day and the girls played 3 x 30 minute games in the pool games.  Going into the final they were very tired and we had some injuries.  To the girls credit they dug deep and in the final played their best game of the tournament and ran over the top of Woree winning easily.

All girls played outstanding on the day, considering only four players on the team were AFL players, the rest were players from soccer, netball, touch & even a couple of dancers.

The team captains were Emma Sorrell& Bailey Devine-Cairncross.

Best on field throughout the tournament  Bailey Devine-Cairncross, Courtney Ford, Emma Sorrell, Jessica Frape & Zali Norsworthy.

Zali Norsworthy won the player of the tournament the Jo Butland medal.  Jo Butland is an outstanding role mole for girls having represented Australia in both AFL & Soccer.
