Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden

Garden ticking along

The garden has been eerily quiet the last couple of weeks!  We’ve had one or two students out at a time between showers, just to do a little bit of weeding and to harvest the last of the tomatoes and pears.  We have pulled out and composted the spent bushes and removed the remaining nets from the fruit trees.

We are really just trying to keep things ticking along, ready for when the students return, and the kitchen gets back into full swing.

If you're gardening at home and looking for something to plant now, here are some suggestions for cool climate vegetables:

Broccoli, cauliflower, garlic, lettuce, spring onion, peas, onions and broad beans.

Happy Gardening!

The Great Scone Bake Off

Well today is the big day, Mrs O’Mealley verses Mr Irwin in “The Great Scone Bake off” .

I am here to tell you this will be a challenge like no other.

I hope Mr Irwin knows what he is doing, and he better not mess up our school kitchen.

May the best scone baker rise to the challenge!

Last newsletter we attached some recipes and activities for you to do while you are at home.

Hopefully you have had a chance to do some, if not please have a go and send in your photos.

The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation have asked if we could pass on some photos of students creations during this time so they can add them to their website.

We would love to see some photos of your vegetable gardens too, we have heard lots of people have made new gardens or refurnished old ones during this time.

This weekend is Mothers Day so we have attached the secret recipe for our scones and also an easy pancake recipe to try (with adult help).

*You may like to treat mum to a special afternoon tea of scones with jam and cream

*perhaps a lazy brekky in bed of pancakes with  a selection of toppings.

* a posy of flowers you have collected from the garden (remember to check with an adult before picking them)

Whatever you choose mum will be delighted with your efforts.

Remember the kitchen garden team encourage you during this time to hop outside and interact with nature, help mum and dad around the garden or even have a go at some of the activities we have attached.

*****Remember we would love for you to send in some photos so get your ipad out and start snapping away and share them with us so we can share them in our next newsletter.

Thanks everyone, stay safe and enjoy your  cooking and gardening.
