Music

Wellbeing Friday Haikus:

Mrs Burt loved seeing the haikus that were written on Wellbeing Friday. For those who want to know, a haiku is a poem which is written to a formula: five syllables in the first line, seven syllables in the second line and five syllables in the third line. Since the whole school is learning poems at the moment, and so many aspects of poetry are musical, the haiku-writing task was the activity set for Music on the                                                              Wellbeing Friday.

The Music elements of Duration, Tempo, Pitch and Dynamics all feature strongly in

well-spoken poetry. They can add emphasis to the words and help add impact to how the audience understands the poem. The Year Three and Four students may have seen a video where I explain these.

If you haven’t seen the video, here is a short version:

  • Duration includes rhythm (found in the words) and beat (the underlying pulse). It also includes accents (like sudden loud sounds, words cut short or lengthened).
  • Tempo describes the speed of the poem, and it’s worth considering varying how fast or slow various parts of a poem could be.
  • Pitch describes the high and low sounds your voice can make as you say the poem, for instance you might use a high or low voice to express something about a character in your poem.
  • Dynamics Just as dynamite is powerful and makes a very loud sound, dynamics is the element of music which has to do with loud and soft sounds.

Playing around with these elements can make your poem really zing!!

Congratulations to Celina W, 5GS, Maebh O, 5PE and Quinn O, 2SB whose excellent work is published below:
