Old Tom Goes on Holiday

Mrs Shirlynn Pereira, HASS Teacher

Mrs Holland had arranged for the artist to visit The King’s College to speak to the primary school students. Unfortunately, due to the lockdown in New South Wales, his trip to Perth was cancelled. He did the next best thing; he sent an interactive video illustrating Old Tom, the mischievous character in his Old Tom Series, allowing all the students to follow.

They went in wondering who Leigh Hobbs was and walked out drawing like the famous Australian author and illustrator – well, almost.

Each Primary School student drew their own Leigh Hobb's type cartoon, and the top three winners were presented with one of the author's books as a prize.

The Year 9 Journalism class was also part of a special Leigh Hobbs reading of his book, "Old Tom Goes On Holiday", to the Pre-Primary students, by Mrs Tania Holland.

Look!  I can draw like Leigh Hobbs!

Article by Emily Roddan-Dedman (Year 9 Journalism Class)

I always thought that drawing cartoons was something only the most talented people can do, but I guess I was wrong. With the right instructions, it can be quite easy - even for Pre-Primary students.

On July 27, the Year 9 Journalism class went to join the Pre-Primary students in the library where Mrs Tania Holland read Old Tom’s Holiday to the class. The book was written by famous Australian author and illustrator Leigh Hobbs.

After reading the story, Mrs Holland played a video in which Leigh Hobbs taught people step-by-step how to draw the main character of his Old Tom series, Old Tom, a mischievous cat.  It was definitely surprising how well the Pre-Primary students went with attempting to draw the funny orange cat.  And I surprised myself with my drawing too!

Virtual Babies

Miss Nieke Kotze, Technologies Teacher

Year 11 Children Family and the Community students got to experience the Virtual baby program. They were given 48 hours to care for the baby, which included feeding, burping, and changing nappies. They all did a wonderful job, as they all successfully completed the program. Tired and exhausted, but with a class full of smiles, it made me feel blessed being the teacher of this amazing group of Year 11's. Very proud teacher. Love Miss K.

Pre-Primary Pyjama Day

Mrs Carol Muhl and Miss Elise Lindley, Pre-Primary Teachers

Throughout the year, our pre-primary students have been counting how many days we have been at school together. When we arrived at day 85, Mrs Muhl suggested to the children that we should do something special to celebrate 100 days at school. At that point, one of the children suggested we have a pyjama day, so that is what we did! We invited PPH to join in on the celebrations, which included dancing, making fairy bread with the Year 10s, and drawing themselves in their pyjamas.

Harry Perkins Institute Excursion

Mr Hudson Servina, Head of Mathematics, Science and Technologies

On Friday, 30 July 2021, students in the Year 11 and 12 Human Biology ATAR classes attended an excursion at the Harry Perkins Institute in Nedlands. The Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research conducts innovative research into the diseases that most affect our families in the WA community and the world, emphasising world-leading cancer research.

At the excursion, the students participated in some biotechnological processes to identify mutations in genetic material using cutting-edge tools. In addition, the students had first-hand, hands-on experience working with some researchers in the laboratory. Students also attended a tour of the facility.

Students expressed their enthusiasm about the excursion. Many of them mentioned that the opportunity was beneficial for their current studies and an eye-opener for future career aspirations.

Zoo Excursion

Mrs Anja van der Westhuizen, Year 3/4R Teacher

The Year 3 and Year 4 classes had a fantastic time at Perth Zoo on Friday, 25 June. The weather was perfect for a day packed with enjoyable learning experiences and many exciting animals to see.

The students explored the zoo in self-guided tours in class groups and participated in education experiences linked to Science and Geography at different times throughout the day. Everyone gathered together for recess and lunch on the beautiful lawn area, and students were also able to relax and play on the Variety Playground.

A big thank you must go to all the teachers and education assistants for being so well organised and to all the wonderful parent and caregiver helpers for all their support on the day.
